Really stupid question...cleanup under hood

SO ive had my jku for about 7 months and trust me, im no mall crawler. Im pretty good about cleanup after being on the trails.
One thing though, im not a wrench head at all. I just lifted my hood for the first time in 6 months and there is mud everywhere!

How do you guys clean under the hood? Im guessing power washer is a bad idea....

Most self-service car washes have an engine cleaner option or you can buy engine cleaner/degreaser at a local store and use it.

I once took a TJ I owned to a guy who does detailing out of an oil change shop. It was a while ago, but I believe he used the pressure washer from the car wash to bit some of the big stuff. He covered the air intake (I had Airraid CAI) with a plastic bag. Then I want to say he used brake cleaner to clean anything greasy.

I use self serve car wash. This sounds crazy but I wash the engine with the engine running so I won't have a problem starting it if some electrical parts get wet.

I use a hose, rag and simple green on my cold motor and I never had a problem getting and keeping it clean. Plus remove the hood mat.

Cover air intake, battery and alternator with foil, spray degreaser and lightly rinse with hose. Only washed once in a few years though.

Simple green does a great job, although there isn't any really nasty clay mud around here which may be a bigger challenge.
