I have an extra one of those rear bars laying around my house (from when my soft top got destroyed.. ). Anyway, a Jeep guy that my buddy works with, was wondering why he always gets rain in his jeep, so I stopped by and took a look. I said, wheres your rear bar? Thats what keeps rain out.. Long story short, he never had a rear bar.
He did some research and said that all Wranglers like 86-2006 or something use the same rear bar. Does anyone know if this is true? Can he use my spare, or does he have to find a YJ bar? Hes a little far for me to just try during the week, and I don't want to just give it away for no reason. If it doesn't fit, I am sure someone needs a TJ window bar thing...
Have him take a measurement on th mounts, but I know that they look very similar. There is a possibility that they never changed that part since the Wrangler was introduced!
I know there are at least two sizes, I needed one for one of my 97's so had the wife pick it up at the dealer. It did not fit in those two clips, it was too thick. Compared it with the other 97 and sure enough, different size. Bought a used top and the previous owner left it in the rear window, it was a skinny one and fit.
Headlight retainer rings are the same, on the 97 they are a different tab pattern then the ones you can buy at Quadratec or the parts stores, even the universal 7" rings don't come close. Very annoying, still looking for a couple more, one to use and one as a spare. 97 has some weird issues that they changed in 98 on.
I'm not sure about the YJ, we never had a soft top for ours, once the hard top came off the bikini went on for 4 months and then the hard top went back on. It very well could be the YJ bar was resused in the early TJ's.
Don't think so. I just replaced my OEM 13 yr old top so I ordered a new bar from Jeeps Are Us. There are "fat" inserts on each end that wouldn't go into the clips on my '94. The original ones are shredded so I just pulled them off the new bar and all is good.
Thats good to know, I'll have to pull the newer fattie out of the shed and look at it a bit closer. I've heard people forget to stuff the rolled up window inside the edges of the top and they end up sliding out around corners.
