Rocks and windshields

Folks, I cannot honestly imagine a rock being thrown up at my windshield.

I've had a mustang and a jeep liberty before, and never had a rock hitting my windshield. The worst ever was a bumblebee splash on my liberty windshield. So I have to wonder if the source of the rock is off of the tires of other vehicles, or off of the tires of your own vehicles.

Can we have a survey of 3 questions:
1. If you have had a rock hit the windshield: yes / no
2. tires you have: stock sport, stock sahara, stock rubi, others..
3. do you have your fenders modified / does your tire stick out of the fender: yes/no

Would greatly help..

1. Yes.
2. 285/70-17 Dtracs
3. Stock fenders, tires stick out 1/2" past.

I did have a quarter size chunk of gravel get my windshield last fall. I was on a 4 lane highway (far right lane), doing 60 and approached a dump truck coming from the opposite direction. The piece of gravel came off his truck, bounced several times as it traveled across the lanes and nailed my windshield high on the drivers side.

Part of it is probably tires, and part of it is the upright windshield. I've had rocks hit my Libby and Integra, but with more rake, a rock more likely to skip off.

1 - yes
2 - stock Sahara
3 - no fender or bumper mods

Never been off-road. I have 4 or 5 chips at ~1300 miles.

I just replaced my windshield from a rock chip turned crack.

1. Yes (never from my own tires)
2. 35" duratracs
3. Stock fenders, 3.5 lift

I've owned 3 Jeeps, I've replaced windshields in two of them, one multiple times. Never due to my fault, always a rock on the highway not offroad

how bout # 4 bumper is it stock/stubby/full width...I used to see tons of rocks flying out between my fenders and stock bumper while i was all stock...since my full width bumper that comes up and meets the fender and running 285-70-17 procomp mt's I no longer see rocks flying around.
1. yes
2. had jeep for a month still stock and seen the rock coming from truck that swerved in front me on highway which hit right at top edge of windshield drivers side. instant 6 inch crack.
3 stock fenders 1/2 inch rubber showing

btw If there was windshield trim I wouldn't of had the crack

over the last 40 years I have had many windshields cracked and chipped. Just had my 2013jku's cracked the other day. Most every time it was the same senerio I was meeting another vehicle from the opposite direction and as we passed each other they would fling a rock and bingo cracked windshield or star burst. On my jeep it was sub 0 and I turned my defrost on high after warming the vehicle up and ping a long crack traveled across the bottom of the windshield. No other vehicles on the road at the time. It used to be really bad in the 70's when they graveled the roads everybody had broken windshields.

New Jeep guy.
1. No
2. Stock Sport S (17's)
3. Stock fenders

So why am I answering, right? For this. My job requires me to drive around in a Ford F350 4x4 Dually for about 45-55K a year, and I get one or two windshields a year. Now, I sell rock crushers and crushing parts, so since I'm driving to quarries all the time, I should expect it, duh. Not really. Not once has it ever broke at or near a rock pit. Winter, summer, whatever, no pattern. They break at the weirdest times, and I never see it coming nor does it make sense when it happens (road construction, a log truck, etc.). At one point in time, we had five of these exact trucks in the company, and they all ate windshields, one or two a year each. Since all the problems with the 6.0 diesel, we've weeded out all but one of the Fords and got Dodges, I have the only remaining F350. I just got my windshield replaced recently, once again, yet we've put one windshield in one Dodge since 2008. My point is that some vehicles seem to cut the air differently, or something, I'm not really sure. It would make sense that a Jeep, being a brick on wheels, with a flat sheet of glass for a windshield, would go through them. However, I can go through as many as Jeep guys do. So is it because I drive so much, my averages would be higher anyway? Nope. We drive the Dodges just as much. Also, I have a Dodge in Alaska for when I work up there, and EVERYONE goes through windshields up there, but in two seasons, not a single chip. Just throwing that out there, Jeeps don't hold the patent on eating windshields.

Been repairing 25 years now....all terrain tires and siped tires are the worst for throwing rocks mud terrain s not so much and if I'm throwing that size rock you don't want to be right on me anywase...
Oncoming traffic, merging traffic that hits over the lines on the road are the main causes the old truck did it is the most overplayed claim it does happen bit not anywhere near the claims that came through...

I do more low profile vehicles and small square box vehicles ie xb and like cars....anything with a larger slanted window catches the rock oreso than the jeep....I've not had a chip on any 4 of my jeeps but my metro , equinox, 4runner, f150 etc have all had chips....its more luck of the draw and the bigger the glass the more real estate is exposed to damage...
I've flicked rocks on my own vehicle over the years and that's usually because my wheels extend past flares the other one is the tire throws a rock forward and up I keep moving and its bouncing "wham" I run into it....

Luck of the draw man....but I do a TON of passenger cars and trucks then vans more than jeeps...I have done a hamdfull including 1 today....

3 months. a new crack every month…ALL COMING FROM THE EDGE! No cap around it, to me, is the culprit. Just talked to Customer Service about it. Got "take it to the dealer so they can check it" response.

I wonder if a piece of vinyl around the edge would help. I agree I think that is the culprit.

Yes
Stock rubicon tires
Stock fender

Got my replaced at 1600 miles. I was falling a car, couldn't change lane fast enough. A log truck past on the left lane kick up a 1/4" rock hit my windshield and stuck between my wiper blade. That really made my day.
