Rules of the Offroad

Just wondering if anyone would like to share some basic rules for off roading. Assume we know nothing, but dont be patronizing. The goal is to get a sticky on this if we get good enough responses. Thanks for sharing!

take a tire repair kit, you never know
ALWAYS take food and water

I am a person who has NEVER been off roading. And as of right now, I don't plan on it but I have questions. And please remember...this is my first Jeep and I am pretty much Jeep/off-roading stupid...thanks!

Hey no problems there, we all have to learn sometime. Hell I've only had my Jeep since March so I am still a newbie! And it's my first Jeep ever.

As far as tools go make sure you have what you need to change a tire, fix a loose hose, and tape something back together. So a small tool box with a set of wrenches, some screwdrivers, some wire and some duct tape.

Your spare will be good enough as long as you don't pickup another nail etc. A tire repair kit with plugs and a small air compressor will get you going again. I have a SureFlow compressor and it works great.

Thanks! It sounds like the normal stuff you should have in your trunk...well maybe not the air compressor but the rest seems common sense. So to become a rock crawler from a mall crawler I should...take out the extra shopping bags, 20 pairs of sunglasses, extra pair of shoes, my bingo bag, sewing kit and garment hangers and replace with the items you listed. This is going to be a big change...

i dont think a winch in necessary (although its a great thing to have) i think a snatch strap and proper tow points are essential. a high lift is a great hobo substitute for a winch and can do wonders in the right hands as well

people love to litter and it gets us kicked out of so many places. bring out what you brought in

tread lightly (google it lots to read) in short be careful not to damage the trail

also people love to explore but if you dont own the property and your not welcome on it stay off of it

I might be better off sticking to mall crawling and burning rubber in the parking lots and damaging my bank account! So many rules and so subjective. For example, what is considered damaging the trails. I mean to me off-roading is kicking up dirt and moving piles of mud and you are maybe going to bump into a bush or two. Unless I see Jeep parts laying all over the place, I would think, that it is just part of the trail and the advanture of the off-roading.

So it basically comes down to respecting the land. How about if you meet a group of people on the same trail going the opposite way?

Trail damage is when some idit pulls up to something, puts it on the floor, spins the tires for two mins in the same spot and digs a huge rut that makes it harder for everone else to get up said spot. This is okay if you are wheeling on your own land, but it is a huge problem in an ORV park

Google your state's OHV laws. Always go with at least one other vehicle...preferably a mechanic who has an air compressor and knows how to fix stuff (look into local jeep clubs where you can make new friends). Buy some tire deflators and an air pressure gauge. Tread lightly, meaning: don't leak oil, don't drive off the trail, don't drive through creeks/rivers unless necessary, don't litter. Bring fire extinguisher, shovel, extra gas, tools, trash bags. If camping, tie everything down and pack cans instead of glass

Everyone is your friend on the trails (from my experience, anyway)....there's a lot of courtesy and people are in no hurry. Whoever can pull over the easiest or find a spot to climb into will generally do so

It might have something to do with me being a bit of a show off, but I will allways pull to the side of the trail and let someone go by if I can. Even if it means pushing a front tire 7 foot up a tree or ledge to get out of the way.

Im also an off road rookie and found this video for my Jeep SUPER helpful with understanding the awesomeness that is 4WD (for when to shift into 4H and 4L and all that jazz) definitely a must watch for rookies including myself!

Great thread so far. I am probably the ultimate rookie on this thread as I do not have a Jeep yet, but I still have a question. What kind of off-roading can you do with a stock JKU Sport? I plan on giving it a try once I make a purchase and will definitely go with others, but how do I know what the Jeep can and cannot handle?

The polite thing to do is whoever has the room to do so should be the one to pull over. If there is more than one in your party, let them know how many are following you.

Look at the window sticker...find out the type of 4WD system your sport will have (that's what I did on my sahara) and I learned I have the Command-Trac 4WD system and then I found the above video on my specific system and learned what it could do..

Jeeps are known for their off road capabilities...it's hard to say what one can or cannot handle without seeing the obstacle itself and ultimately making the decision on whether you and your jeep can handle it or not...for instance making sure you know when and how to use your 4WD as opposed to just gunning it through a mud puddle and hoping for the best lol I did that a week after i got mine and luckily I managed to get out, but I had no idea what I was doing and it just seemed like an innocent little mud puddle waiting for me to tear through it, after almost getting stuck in 2WD I realized I had a lot to learn even for the little stuff lol

good stuff, how about if you have to stack a few rocks to get over an obsticle, should you clear them after you complete it or just leave them? I guess Im looking for common courtesies also. So post up what you have and anything you can think of on the subject. Thanks again!

Also, when two vehicles meet on a grade and there isn't a safe place to pull over, the vehicle traveling uphill has the right of way.

Lots of people will leave rocks when they have to stack them. When I HAVE to use a rock or two I have my passanger kick them off to the side when I get past them. If the next jeep wants them they will be close by but not in the way.

The elasticity. And a static load capacity is different from its kinetic capacity. Just like breaking strength is not the same as working load.

There is nothing wrong with a tow strap if used correctly. As long as you aren't trying to yank someone out with a tow strap they are fine. Just go slow, take all the slack out, then pull slow and steady. Ideally, a recovery strap and a tow strap should be in a recovery bag. Different methods for different situations. Just don't use a tow strap with metal hooks, those are weak and can be very dangerous.
