Question Serious Question......

I did think long and hard befor posting this question!

As much as you LOVE your Jeep (a DD), if you knew that there was a 90% probability that gas would be $5 per gallon or more, before the end of the year, would you opt for a Prius????

Nope.

Soon the streets of all major cities would be flooded with hybrid type vehicles all looking the same. I'd enjoy being one of the few really great and fun vehicles still left out there.

No. At 6000 miles per year average driving, my gasoline expense would only go up $67.00 per month.

Right - I encourage others to buy hybrids and small cars, to keep the price of gas down for me... (I have a JKU, a Suburban, and a Silverado.)

NOPE!

I would ride a bicycle to work before I drive a foreign made hybrid. Now would I buy an American hybrid? Maybe... I could see me buying my wife a hybrid Tahoe, but that would be as GREEN as I would ever get!

Nope.

Not in a heartbeat, as long as the Jeep meets my family's needs.

I can see why people who drive LOTS might do it, but for as much as I drive, I'd be willing to bet my savings would not be all that much.

Not a chance. I knew my fuel expenses would be higher with my Jeep, and I was fully willing to accept it. Even if it did get that high. I don't think I'd trade my JKU for anything out there; no matter how much gas money it would save me.

By the numbers:

Using 12,000 miles per year driven, 50 mpg for Prius & 18mpg for Wrangler with $5/gal fuel.

12,000mi/50mpg = 240 gal x $5/gal =$1200 per year

12,000mi/18mpg = 667 gal x $5/gal =$3335 per year

$178 per month more
-----
Right now at $3.40/gal

12,000mi/50mpg = 240 gal x $3.40/gal = $816 per year

12,000mi/18mpg = 667 gal x $3.40/gal = $2,268 per year

$121/month more
---------------------

So at $5/gallon you are only paying $57 more a month in fuel costs than you are now when compared to a Prius.

Feel better?

If gas got so high and I didn't have a company provided vehicle I would buy a used prius or other proven gas sipper as a second car. Then again in FL I could simply use my motorcycle.

No Way. I rate my Jeep on Smiles per Gallon and that isn't going to change no matter how much they cost.

No way...not in a million years! If the price gets really high, I'll adjust my finances to make sure I can keep the tank filled.

Wait wouldn't SMG go up every time you added a shiny new something brought by the man/woman in brown? .....

But to answer the OP, no way, no how, never gonna happen.

But then gas prices don't really affect me much. We literally live less than 2 miles from where we work. We average less than 50 miles per week, in both and that's only hit if that one Jeep did all the drop off and pick ups for kids as well as grocery trips. We average 150 miles when we go out on a Saturday or Sunday to play in the dirt which we do at least twice a month, sometimes more. So we're both in the huge minority where most of our miles really do add up when we're out playing with them on the weekend.

Did you really just ask that question?

It's just as bad as asking if there was 90% chance that you wouldn't get laid by a girl, then would you turn gay...

Just my opinion...

No - Economically is does not work out when you add in the monthly payments of a new car. You are also talking about two diffeent catagories of vehicles. You are compairing apples to catfish.

When I bought my LJ, I did the math based on my commute at the time, and decided even at 5 bucks a gallon I didn't care. Of course now my commute is even less, and I'm in the market for some kind of sports car that would get better mileage anyway if I needed a commuter

No.

I was behind a prius pulling into a parking lot that normally floods if we get any rain at all, the prius couldnt make it thru and had to turn around while I just plowed through with the biggest smile on my face. Plus, a prius would not like my steep driveway at all.
