Shackles (d-rings) or Tow Hooks?

So, I have done a search, and found a few threads on other forums...but what is the general consensus here for recovery points?

Shackles:

Is there a disadvantage to shackles other than being a bit slower? Which really shouldn't matter unless you're competing or something. Safer, more secure, work at any angle.

I use both. I have 4 D-shackles on the jeep, 2 front and 2 rear. Haven't used them yet, but they are there. I also have the stock hooks on the front that I use mostly in winter to pull cars out of the snow or an occasional tree limb across the street.

x2, shackles are generally safer. There are also aftermarket hooks with clips to help secure the recovery line.

Id def thrown in Shackles if I could find a way to mount them with my bumper, for the reasons mentioned above plus they look cool

The hooks with the clips are good for one use...the clips snap easier than a twig

Why JIMBO does this mean we're not friends anymore? You know JIMBO, if I thought you weren't my friend... I just don't think I could bear it!

I love that movie.

Anyway, in all seriousness, I figured the reason people don't usually have them hanging from their bumpers, despite looking cool, is for the very reasons you listed. You just have to admit the irony.

As for the replies, from what little I found elsewhere, there were plenty of logical arguments for the shackles (as anyone with a brain would be able to come up with). Yet those who had both tended to say the same thing: they use the hooks more often. I was simply curious how this forum leaned.
