Shifting into 4H and 4L

I know this might break a lot of you off roaders hearts, but i just got to ask.

i just got a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport Automatic and i want to know whats the best way to shift into 4H and 4L?

please guide me

your owner's manual will tell you.

4 hi can be engaged at any speed is how its described. so 4 hi you can go in and out anytime you want. 4 lo however can only be engaged when stopped, transmission in nuetral. they say you can be barely rolling also, but i just do it at a complete stop.

i agree w/ dave. i only put it in 4lo while stopped and in neutral. i have a n auto too and if i am moving at all it will grind while engaging. stopped is always better.

to being out of gear in a manual I don't know about because when you push in the clutch your basically in nuetral. So on my manual it is in gear but clutch is in when I go into 4lo

i just got back from a trip and got worked trying to go up a hill cause i couldnt get it into 4low.
im going to have to try it out

You need to be stopped or moving no more thn 3 or 4 mph to shift into 4lo. The gears need to align just right, never force it.
