your owner's manual will tell you.

4 hi can be engaged at any speed is how its described. so 4 hi you can go in and out anytime you want. 4 lo however can only be engaged when stopped, transmission in nuetral. they say you can be barely rolling also, but i just do it at a complete stop.

It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president."

i agree w/ dave. i only put it in 4lo while stopped and in neutral. i have a n auto too and if i am moving at all it will grind while engaging. stopped is always better.

to being out of gear in a manual I don't know about because when you push in the clutch your basically in nuetral. So on my manual it is in gear but clutch is in when I go into 4lo

You need to be stopped or moving no more thn 3 or 4 mph to shift into 4lo. The gears need to align just right, never force it.
