Scooby too!

Honestly? It's ok, not wonderfull like some people claim but it is doing it's job so far.

Here's what I don't ike about the top:

Where the top fits into the windshield channel there's no plastic strip like my BestTop bikini. When you attach the top into the windshield channel you fold the top over at the seam then stuff (and I mean stuff) the edge of the top into the windshield channel. At first I thought there was no way this would even stay attached like this but it hasn't given me a problem so far. Time will tell.

The center strap that attaches to the footman loop in the middle of the top is too short. I had to remove my foam roll bar padding in order to get it tight. If they made this strap another 4-6 inches longer this wouldn't have been a problem.

The clasps that lock the straps in place are plastic. I'm not talking about a big high quality type of plastic here. These things seems brittle to me. If there is one weak point in the top (or failure point) I think this would be it. These clasps just don't seems like they'll hold up over time. IMO.

Where the sides of the top "lock" into the door suurounds it's loose. They actually put a hard plastic strip in the seam but it's too long for the door surrounds. Because of this they just flop around in the slot. This seems to me like this should be tight to pull any slack out of the top.

The top doesn't fold and store "as advertised". If you look at their website and read through the instructions (and pictures) of how to fold the top up you would think that you simply unzip the side windows and flip them to the roof. Then you connect the two side windows with the zippers and this holds them in place. At least that's what I got out of the website. That's not how it works AT ALL. You completely remove the windows and place them in a nylon bag then you velcro the nylon bag to the roof, pull the rear window up and on top of the nylon bag, then pull the top back over the bag. This wasn't how I thought the top worked. Does it work this way? Yes. But it wasn't the way I understood it.

And the last thing, it's isn't as quiet as the OEM top. I don't care what anyone else says it's just not as quiet. It's isn't horrible but there is definatley more noise.

I know that seems like alot of negatives (and it is) but I still like the top. I'm just not ranting and raving about it like everyone else is. It does give you coverage from the elements, keeps your stuff out of harms way and it does convert to a full bikini. I'll keep the top and I'll probably sell my OEM but not any time soon.

I hope that helps!

Thank you, Scout! This is the kind of info I need.

I was under the impression the windows just folded up into the roof too. You just unzip em, lay em flat on the roof and fold the outer piece over em. Hmmm....

This is good to know. Thanks.

Wow, this is really good information. I was planning on getting some sort of a soft top this summer and I don't think I'll be going with a Viking. Thanks for all the good info. Would anyone recomend a complete soft top setup over any other type or are the all the same?

Let me clarify a little bit because what I posted was "the bad". I still think it is a good replacement soft top. Also from what I've heard about the other options out there I still think the Viking is the best option. It's just not EXACTLY what everyone says it is. I just wanted you guys to know this information so you can make a decision based on some real facts. The only other information out there is from a bunch of people with a fairly one-sided opinion on the top.

Viking isn't the only company to make cool jeep tops. I'm looking at either the Viking, or this one. So if you don't wanna do the viking, take a look at these.

Oh bro, let me stop you right there. Before you make the leap to California Tops you really need to do some research on that company. There are some MAJOR horror stories out there about them. I'd stay away if I were you.

Yeah like scout said. i have hear some horrible stories about the cutsomer service from them.

ANNND my top works fine. i (having no prior soft top use) really like it. Like scout said (once again) there are some negatives. The top seems to be very loose over the driver and passanger's seat area. this is only a problem for me when it rains really hard for a really long time and the top collects water. Having said that if i know it is going to rain really hard i will just leave my hard top on OR put a bar between the roll bars to take some pressure off. I may end up getting a bikini prop top soon. The top is a bit different to put up than stated on their site but its not hard just different.
NOW on to the positives...
I really like the versitilit of this top. It is very easy to use. All of the negatives aren't really negatives, just slight differences than what i understood. I really like having a soft top. I have had a hard top on ever since i got the jeep (yes i do take it off...a lot actually). The fact that i can put the windows up in the summer is very nice. I realize that all of these features are in normal soft tops but i just like the viking.

All in all, i love my viking fast back top. (happy valentine's day fast back, baby)

Nick

When you look at their advertising, and look at their website, you would think this was the best top, for every occasion. Wow, I am bummed out, that it isn't what they advertise.

Personally I was really pissed that the top didn't work "as advertised". That was the part of the top that really hooked me.

Just for reference: Two nights ago I decided to put my top back down because the weather is getting colder. I went out to the garage and started putting it down. I started at 8:05 and was finished a little after 8:30. Now keep in mind that this was the first time I've put the top back down and yes there is a learning curve there too. Also, I'm not the most patient person either.

The top fits VERY tight, especially with roll bar padding. Also I did do this inside without it being in the sun to help stretch it out as I worked. I hope after a little practice with it I get it down to well less than 10 minutes. However, in 10 minutes you can sure get soaked pretty good in a rain storm.

Like I said before, I like the top. It does work as a full bikini and it is a full soft top. It's just not "as advertised".

Gotta pic of the rig, scout?

These Viking tops come in some unusual colors? I've seen a white YJ around with a blaze orange soft top, and I think its a fastback style top, because I remember thinking it looked a lot different but hadn't seen one of these Viking tops yet. Every time I've seen it it was driving the other way and we're both goin 50 somethin. Hard to get a good look at the last second. I've been thinking about some replacement for my soft top, I hate how it looks. The hoop bars stick up too high IMO, looks weird. I like the look of the Viking top, and the California top looks pretty cool, but from what I hear I don't want a Cali. That pretty much the only options for different tops? I like the half top look, but I don't think my half doors and sliding windows would work with it. I'm not sure.

You've got to love it when they PS the shots of their jeeps. How many of you have seen TJ's with fuel doors on the passenger side?
