Are you nervous? I always am when I take one of my vehicles in. But they always pass.

I worried about my YJ this last time. 14 years old, yet passed with flying colors. Good luck!

What intrigued me was I just recently did our 2002 Tahoe. Guy just plugged into the gash harness connector and the tailpipe probe plus the gas cap later. WHen done I asked about the rollers (dyno style) that they had used for the YJ. Told me there was something in the Chevy that despite selective 4x4 switch they could use the drive test vs manually selecting the transfer case? All this technology....it'll never last!

Every time I put my Chevy in 4WD (push button) in my mind I think "come on man.....go in 4WD" I miss the transfer case lever and locking hubs.

I'm pissed!

OK guys... Well, when I picked this place I figured I would pick a place that would service the emission system and would catch and fix anything I missed. To bad the feminine hygiene product container had an agenda to make money!

I handed in my keys and the manager tossed them to this young kid. The kid went out into the lot and fired up the Sarge as the manager commented on how nice he thought my Jeep looked. The kid drove my Jeep around back. I stepped outside to make a little "emissions" my self and lit a cigarette. This kid came out of the side of the building and motioned me to come over to where he was. "Your Jeep is a "Test Only" Jeep and should really only be tested there." Do you still want me to run the pretest? I thought it was a bit odd when he told me that. Maybe he knew something I didn't. But I ok'd the pretest.

I could hear them running the Jeep up to about 2000 rpm. I peer out into the garage and the hood was up and the hose was connected to the Tailpipe. Then, they shut it down and the manager came out from the garage area, looked at me, and said.... "Well, it failed!" I thought "Oh Great" how much more time and money am I gonna have to put into this thing to get it to pass?!

He told me I had disconnected wiring, my air filter box didn't have a thermostatic switch and there were several other "little things". He said it would run in the neighborhood of $500 to fix it.

Here is a scan of the sheet from the test.

As you can see by the test results, it passed! The only 2 items on the sheet that show a failure are the "Wiring to sensors" and "Thermostatic air cleaner" As far as the numbers I fall within or exceed the standards.

Remember guys, I spent way too much time under that hood. I know that thing like the back of my hand!

So, I asked the guy what "Sensors" were unplugged. He said there is a vacuum sensor on the firewall that is disconnected. I told him it was only a switch to activate the "4X4" light on the dash (I bypassed the vacuum motor on the axle a while back) and had no bearing on emissions. He kinda gave me a scowl and said... "Well, there is the issue with your Air Filter! You don't have a thermostatic switch."

"It's missing?" I said. He said "yeah, it's gone". I knew I had him at this point because I hooked the goddamn thing up myself.

I believe that if I do take it to a "Test Only" center it will pass. And if it does, I'm thinking of reporting this minuscule oral intake unit for male sexual organs to the better business bureau.

What do you guys think?

Is it gone? They removed it?
These guys are heavily regulated by the Air Board (CARB) and DMV. Turn them in for fraud. BTW the BBB kinda sucks at mediating these types of issues. They don't carry much weight and business's that operate on the shady side know this. TV stations that handle these issues do a better job of resolving the problem.

Damn, I'm gonna go out to the garage and look to see if it is missing... If it IS... Boy is there gonna be a lot of hell raised here in SoCal today... Also, TV stations huh?! Oh pointy... You're EVIL! And I like it!

I guess I'm just Jaded. I worked in parts and service for many many years... Hell, I'm only a few years from a gold watch... So, I can't help but walk through the door of a place like this with an attitude. I guess that's why I do all my own work. If I could smog test this thing my self I would!

OK... Here's what I did. I went out to the garage to see if my Thermostatic Air Cleaner was still there. Yes... Yes it was. HMMMM Hell, it's not even transparent. I know the Smogtards had to have seen it there big as life setting on the inner fender.

So, I tidied up a bit under the bonnet in hopes that if they see a clean engine compartment they will be more likely to to pass it and not look for things under the microscope. I also ran a dummy line from the vacuum 4X4 switch to the axle.

I called another Smog shop and described what had transpired. I felt kinda bad... I almost put this guy on the spot because I wanted to hear the words "Yes, he was just trying to take your money". Oh well, I'm gonna go give this $hit one more try. I'll let you know how I fared.

OK, just got back from Garage #2.

It still failed.

But it DID NOT fail for the items the first shop described.

It PASSED the emissions test.
It PASSED the visual test.
It FAILED the function test.

The guy at the shop said that it passes everything but the Fuel Evap Controls Function. There is a vapor leak in my fuel tank when it's under pressure. So, I have to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump gasket, and while it's down I may as well replace all the lines. So, I guess I have to start looking for parts.

Just ordered new fuel filler lines, fuel filter, fuel cap, and a fuel pump (the pump comes with all the necessary gaskets) . No need in dropping the tank and not putting in a new pump.

Well hell, this way, if I fix this stuff and take it back to the same shop, it should pass. If not, I'm gonna get drunk and bask in the glow of my Jeep's funeral pyre!

Just kidding.

On the plus side if it passes, you can also get drunk and bask in the glow of a job well done.

This Cali emissions crap is ridiculous! Especially given the number of heaps running around without anything in other states!

Most states emission testing is now done thru the OBD port, they just plug it in, start it up, monitor it for a given period and record the readings. Readings are alot more detailed though. They dump the whole ecu memory for like the last 20 or so 'cycles' [cold-hot-cold]. Pretty soon once all the new vehicles are equipped with bluetooth they won't even have to hook it up. The other side of the coin is the police will also be able to send a 'kill' command to your vehicle instead of putting one of those nail pads out which they can already do with onstar equipped cars
Yup, technology is great eh....

OK everyone... Here's the skinny. I dropped the tank, replaced the fuel pump (while it was down... Don't really want to drop that tank again for a while!) all the seals, all the hoses including the filler neck hoses and replaced the gas cap.
While the Jeep was down, I wanted to replace the intake/exhaust manifold and valve cover gaskets. Thanks for your help tiny!

So, it's all buttoned up and I will be trying to get this damn thing smogged again on Monday!!! I'll keep you posted.

Good luck. Just think... back in WV they would just ask you to put some fresh duct tape over the rust, and fix that pesky exhaust leak.... You could have been on your way home, drinking a beer, shootin' dinner from the driver seat

Good luck on the smoggy test bud.

I like being MIL. and in Kansass. They check my vin #, and ask how many cylinders and I'm on my way. Hell they thought my S10 was a V8 fullsize til I showed them the title and the vin in the dash..

The residents of California can step outside and take a nice deep CLEAN breath of fresh air!!!

The Jeep passed with flying colors this morning at the smog station!

Now all I have to do is go to the DMV tomorrow and slap my tags on it!

Hell yeah! In retrospect, it was all worth it. I don't think there are any areas of the Jeep right now that are questionable. It's basically brand new on a lot of levels.

Looking forward to wheeling it this weekend!
