Spare stolen

Just a little over 1 week old and someone already stole my spare tire. $700 loss.

Moral? Install Mopar wheel locks for $45. Don't park anywhere without them. Just ordered mine with my replacement tire and rim.

Unless those are some amazing new kind of wheel lock, they won't really help. Now one of my friends had a bicycle cable lock through his spare, I don't know if it helped but nobody ever stole it either...

I'm interested to know why you think they won't help. According to the product description, there's an "exclusive Mopar key." Doesn't that mean that, if you don't have the key, the tire won't come off?

From what I understand, all tires - including the spare - have a TPMS sensor in them. I assume that's coded to particular Jeeps, correct? In other words, you couldn't buy a tire with the TPMS, mount it on your car, and expect it would register with the Jeep's computer.

That got me thinking: if I purchased the spare from this listing, would there be a way to verify that this was, in fact, the tire that was stolen from me based on the way it was programmed?

No. Tpms is tpms, It won't matter
Maybe he could sell you just the spare.
Also alot of folks use the AEV Procal to adjust what the ECU sees in the tires to 0.
Matter of fact I think you can actually use at tire without the sensors if a Procal was used.

There should be some resolve in JUST your spare was stolen. The first weekend I owned my 2012 Jeep Sahara I drove my wife and I to the mall. We walked around for about an hour and when we returned, three of my four mount tires were slashed. $887 dollars to replace.

Police said likely the culprit saw the temp tags on such a nice vehicle and just wanted to send a message. I received it loud and clear.

Why would someone do that? What was the message, It makes no sense I could only picture some crazy yelling "Argh! Rubber stay away I feel threatened, I cut you!"

Hearing these stories really sucks, makes me really wonder what to expect in the future

It's the moral bankruptcy of a philosophy whose only basis is destruction. I see it everywhere in the world. It makes me physically nauseous. Don't get me started.

Sounds like one of my favorite quotes from M*A*S*H:

As the video showed, they're only a theft deterrent....there's always a way to remove them. But anyways, I think I've seen actual pad lock setups for the spare wheels as well.

You can buy an entire set of Rubicon take offs for that much. I see people selling singles all the time on CL.

I'd love to pursue a different option. I have the upgraded Sahara wheels with the Bridgestone Dueler A/T tires P255/70R18 (18-Inch x 7.5-Inch 7-Spoke Polished Aluminum Wheels) and I would love to find someone who would sell and ship me just one. I'm looking on CL currently.

If there are any interested here, please PM me.

I know I'd hate to loose my $220 spare! I wish we could booty trap our Jeeps, but I heard it's a little illegal...

If any mods are around, I might suggest adding this to the 2012 Wrangler information thread as newbs like us didn't realize what the criminal activity is like for these spares. I had a spare on my SUV for 14 years. Never used once and never stolen.

I'd suggest adding a suggestion to consider your first mod as tire locks. At least it would prompt some of us to do a little more research and then make the decision. Had I known this was such a problem, I wouldn't have left the dealership without the locks. Yes, I know you can get the spare anyway. But, clearly, it makes it much more difficult and, for $45, it seems like a very reasonable risk reducer.

I know that I didn't think of it when I bought my Jeep, but luckily it came with one. It was a typical stock rim though. When I bought my $50 rims, they each came with one, so now I have locks on all 5 wheels.
