So I've narrowed down my problem to the spider gears and I will pull the cover tomorrow to confirm this.Question is can an average joe with a bit of shade tree mechanic skills and a set of sockets and hand wrenches replace them?

here is a little better step by step...

1) remove the center pin bolt with a 12point 8mm BOX end
2) tap out the center pin slowly till you can grab it and pull it out of the carrier
3) pull the C clips
4) pull out the axles about 3 inches, you can leave the rims and tires on them.. ive done it too many times
5) remove all the gears, make sure you take the spider shims too, dont leave them in
6) replace and reverse the above for installation

This is also a great time to replace the stock spider gears with a locker like Lock Rite or Aussie. If you are at a 33 or smaller tire the axle should hold up fine. Good luck with your project.

no once you have the cross pin out the axle should slide in so the c clip can clear the axle gear then that clip should almost fall off

It's not wanting to slide enough for the clip to fall out for some reason

If you haven't already, try removing the wheel and brake drum. It may be that the shoes are hanging up in the drum and not letting the axle shaft move far enough. If that's not it, you may have a twisted shaft.
