Hey Guys, this is a little bit of a "panic post". I recently did the undercarriage of my jeep with some Fluid Film and also did some minor bed lining with Rustoleum rattle cans. I wore a mask, but realized after it wasn't an "organic vapor mask" - now I'm freaking out and worried I'll get lung cancer or something.
Has anyone else done these types of jobs? what kind of masks did you wear, etc? (if any?)
Just want to know if I'm worrying too much and if the warnings on the cans are just to cover their butts...
You should match the mask to the product you're using, and fit test it for proper fit. Having said that an occasional user should be OK w/o proper protection, but it is very important and should be used.
There are plenty of people spraying all kinds of products w/o any protection at all. In fact I see it all the time on the Velocity channel watching guys build cars, restore them, whatever. It's stupid but done everyday. Next time get the right equipment, and for now worry about something else. You should be fine!
I just added the attached to my amazon wishlist for future products. We've only been in our home about a year, and I'm buying a wrangler... there will definitely be some painting in my future!
There are hoods you can get, we wore them at work when we got scruffy. Basically seal around your lower neck then face. They are good when making a real mess
Yea, I saw a guy on a forum for my previous car who bought a gas mask from the middle east where almost everyone has beards. It worked pretty well some out was designed to work on someone with one.
In case anyone was curious, I contacted 3M. This was the response they sent me for these two products:
"A reusable respirator with an organic vapor cartridge and a P95 prefilter is suitable for most of the components in the Fluid Film and Rust-Oleum Topcoat aerosol products, with the exception of the propellants. For both products, a cartridge or filter is not available for the propellants (LPG, propane). For the other components, the 3M 6500 Series Rugged Comfort Half Facepiece Respirator (6501/6502/6503) with the 6001 Organic Vapor Cartridge, 5P71 P95 Prefilter and 501 Retainer is a suggested option for you to consider. The 6500 with 6001/5P71/501 may be used for exposures up to 10X the occupational exposure limit (OSHA PEL). Depending on your use conditions, such as ventilation and quantity of aerosol sprayed, it may be possible to use a disposable model with the nuisance organic vapor feature such as the 8577 P95. The 8577 is suitable for most particle hazards, inc luding the aerosol mists, and nuisance levels (non-harmful) of organic vapors in the Rust-Oleum topcoat. Product links are provided below.

Thank you for choosing 3M."
