Exclamation Squeaking/ringing noise?!?

Hi,
I did a bunch of muddy water and shallow lake crossings this weekend and on my way home I noticed a squeaking/ringing kind of sound coming from the front end that wasn't there before.
It starts after a while of driving then goes away for a very short time and comes right back.

At first I thought it was the brakes but I took them off and cleaned the mud out of them and the noise it still there.

What do you all think it could be and what should I start checking?

I would check and lube all steering joints, and all bushings with either lithium grease or silicone spray. If it's ringing though, it sounds like it could be your wheel bearings, or if a squeal, try some belt dressing on your serpentine belt.

it's more of a ringing and it's defiantly not the belt. how do I check my wheel bearings? and if I need to change them, is it easy?

Checking your wheel bearings and seals is a fairly time intensive job. First thing, if you've never repacked wheel bearings, get a haynes manual a spindle nut socket and a set of wheel seals while you're still at the parts store, next, jack up front end and remove your wheels and tires. Remove the bolts from your calipers and slide the calipers off your rotors, remove the outer dust cap and clean the area, then pull the cotter pin and retainer, and remove the spindle nut. Slide your rotors off the spindle, and inspect the spindle for any scoring/scarring/blueing. Next, clean the outer bearing and rotate to check for any roughness or play in the bearing, if everything is okay, repack the bearing. Move to the inner bearing, use a cold chisel on the lip of the seal and hammer towards the center of the rotor from the outside until the seal folds and you can remove it. Pull the inner bearing and inspect as the first, if all good repack, if not replace. Reinsert bearing and install new seal, carefully tapping into place with a hammer or use a seal driver, slide assembly back onto spindle and reassemble in reverse order. Forgive me if I missed a few things, this was from memory, check your haynes manual, it will give you a detailed step by step.

Now is also a good time to do a full brake inspection as well.

If he has a 2000 TJ he has unit bearings.The only way to service them is replace them.They are about $150.00 per side.There are no seals as the bearings are sealed.Bill

I know for sure 97 and newer TJs have the unit bearings I am not sure about earlier models.Once you get the rotors off and the cotter pin and retainer nut off, there are 3 12 point bolts on the back of the steering knuckles that will have to be removed.After removing the bolts it can still be hard to get the hub/ bearing assm out.I would check my axle shaft u joints it sounds as if they might be the problem.Once the hub/bearing assm. is removed you can pull the axles right out.Bill

ok im going to try to solve this.

Could this noise be coming from my axle shaft u-joints?

From my experience, it what is sometimes refered to as " the angry sparrows " because thats what it sounds like !

I have gone through 2 front drivelines-- there is no way to lube them unless you take it to a driveline shop and have them put in a zert fitting.. well worth the $$

Easy way to find out -- remove the front driveline and take it for a quick spin !
