Steering very heavy when braking

I was driving my wife's XJ yesterday and when I was pulling into a parking spot, the steering got very heavy feeling. I was applying the brake at the same time and when I released the brake, the steering felt normal. When driving on the roads or highway, everything is normal. Only in a tight turning space. Any suggestions of what it could be?

Jeff

Does your wife's XJ have the AW4 in it?

Well, ain't the AW4 then.

Have you tried to get it to mimic it yet. Is it a constant when slow turning or only when using the brakes?

only happened in the parking lot. I was turning sharp into a spot with the brake on at basicly idle speed. To me it felt like the power steering had went out. I checked the fluid, it is clean and full. I can coast and turn around a corner with no problems.

The XJ did come from the factory with the AW4 if that makes a difference.

Random idea...how it the serpentine belt? Glazed, cracked, stretched? May have slipped and not produced full grip on the PS pulley.

The belt is in pretty good shape. Has the normal cracks on the inside, but no fraying or chunks missing.

I wish it were more ready for off-roading. I am currently saving for her lift kit. Currently sitting on stock size rubber.
