Stereo question

I'm trying to decide on which way to go on this... I want to improve my stereo and not sure to get an amp and new speakers or just put in a better stereo system and speakers... any thoughts?

That's a loaded question with soo many tangents.

It's like anything else, what do you want to do and how much are you willing to spend.

What music do you listen to?
CDs?
mp3?
Ipod?
like it loud?
want some "thump"?
what do you currently have?
Want to loose some space?

you can go as cheap as a hundred dollars and have something that many people are happy with, or you can spend hundreds of dollars, maybe even thousands, and have something that is.....whatever.

I have the stock system in there now and want something with better sound and don't want to spend my retirement on it. I listen to the radio, CD's and my Ipod. I already plan on getting better speakers but wasn't sure on an amp or a new stereo. I think I read on one of these threads the rear speakers don't have as much power going to them but I can't swear I saw that.

Get a new head unit and speakers. The factory head unit can't drive good speakers good enough. Make sure the head unit can accept an amp so that down the road if you decide to crank it up you'll already have the right components. I'm truly amazed at how well my stereo sounds, and how well I can hear it, driving topless at speed.

I agree with both posts... I was driving back from Joplin to OKC and had the top down and had problems hearing the stereo at times. If I get one it will be the kind the face plate comes off, or just keep my pit bull in the back seat when I'm not in the jeep lol

Quadratech has some good deals on plug and play units made by Sony..iPod ready. The supplied wire harness plugs into factory harness, and there are RCA plugs for future sub amps etc,, I just drove from Colorado, back to Pennsylvania, with a ragtop, and it was plenty loud enough to enjoy.. I have used amps, subwoofer, and speakers sitting on my bench, just waiting to be installed. None of it high end stuff, just sturdy, poly speakers.. Good enough for a jeep... My home system? State of the Art components!!

Wouldn't buy it from quadratec. They are selling outdated systems for premium prices. you get the newer stuff cheaper if you search around. you can easily get a new head unit that accepts CDs and interfaces with the Ipod. I recently replaced my stock speakers 5 1/4 with sony Explode 6 1/2 in my sound bar (not sure what Jeep you have so.....). The Explodes went in no mod required. But.... They didn't sound much better than what I had.

First thing is to get a better head unit. Try it with the speakers you have. Also get the wiring adaptor so you arn't cutting wires. Probably an installation kit for your make/model.

I didn't check to see what model you have, I think the newer ones are harder and more expensive to replace the radios in,

Check out Crutchfield. They carry the major brands as well as speakers, wiring harnesses and mounting kits. If you call them they will recommend quality parts based on your listening preferences. If you order from them, they include the extras at no cost, which can add up, if purchased separately. Their technicians are very knowledgeable.

The best thing you can do is check out your local mom and pop stereo store. I hate it when people dont even give their local vendors a chance. We are in the stereo biz and are always cheaper than online vendors

Kenwoods sound nice but are the most complicated to use. Read www.cnet auto stereo reviews.

not around my area,,i can find stuff way cheaper online, and in the shops around here people are real unfriendly,

example,,i went to "mompopshop" and had an amp installed,,i then called back and asked about eight inch woofers and the guy told me,,"oh that amp is way to big for an eight,i think you should come in and have another amp installed for the smaller sub"
so i said,"what if i just adjust my amp"
and he said, "if you feel like wasting your time,go ahead"
so i in return said "better than wasting my money".

this is not the only stereo shop i have been treated like this in,,everyones seems to either have a chip on there shoulder or act better than you.

Unfortunately the mom&pops for auto stereo in my area are usually run by kids that like to believe they are " experts " and try to sell and install overpriced junk that sounds like junk.. Big amps and big wattage do not translate to quality listening pleasure. It's not rocket science! Jeeps are horrible for acoustics, and the best one might do,, is smooth out the sub-woofer with a good poly speaker, and a good amp, I use poly, as they are weather proof, and over the long haul will sound better than paper,,, once again, in a jeep. I got that Sony 650 whatever and the install kit from Quadratec for 109.00 shopped for several weekends.. Crutchfield couldn't touch that price.. For home audio,, mom& pops exclusively..

i took stuff into my hands many years ago,,only reason i had to hit up shop this last time was to bypass the factory amp(i had no idea where it even was),,but i do agree,,i live in va but was raised in ny and the shops around upstate ny seem to have a much more friendly atmosphere..

thats pretty odd actually,,shops are more friendly in N.Y. than virginia beach,,,,go figure,,

I hit Crutchfield and bought a Alpine Ipod ready head unit with cable included, Boston 5.25 for the sound bar and Boston 4" for the front dash, Crutch field sends all the harness hookups and adaptor plates(free) a breeze to hook everything up, I bought a 8' sub built in its own box with amp that sits under the rear seat(jap brand) it sounds great but remember a Jeep with a soft top is not gonna thump the greatest

You cant go wrong with a full on new interface. If i was you and had the money I would go indash 6 cd changer, built in USB input for your iphone or smart phone, and some banging door speakers. Nothing to outlandish - that is what i have in my ride and sounds amazing.

I would still want a cd player but I agree on the usb port and a jack for my IPod. I've looked at a few and working on narrowing it down, and prying the money out of my wallet lol
