Suggestings for buying first jeep?

Hey I was looking into buying my first jeep (as a toy mainly) and wanted some suggestions of what to look for.

I would rather not spend more than $5,000 as it IS a toy but mostly everything I see for that much has over 150,000 miles and/or is salvage title. How reliable are Jeep Wranglers, are they good to go past 150,000 miles?

I like the 90's models wranglers with the completely removable top , and I like the fact that you can ding em, scratch em (to a point), and let it get all rained in and it's still a badass ride and still good to go What should I look at when buying one of these models? Are there specific models/options I should look for?

How expensive are they to maintain to keep driving on the road? I would like to get the 4cyl just to try to save on gas, but is the 6 cyl pretty much required?

Thanks ahead for any tips or suggestions!

BTW this is something similar to what I was looking for Jeep : Wrangler | eBay except it's still a little on the expensive side for me... Even with 130,000 miles you think it would still be good for another 70k?

Thanks ahead!!

You're asking a lot of good questions and there are some knowledgeable people on this forum who will weigh in, so let me just tell you what little I know:

First welcome to the Forum! You're about where I was two years ago. I had wanted a CJ/Wrangler since high school and finally decided to get one "for under $7,000 just as a toy." I ended up getting a great deal on a 2007 and didn't regret it.

I looked at the Jeep you linked and, honestly, it looks like a pretty good deal for what they're asking. Probably $1,500 just in wheels and tires there. As to mileage, I'll yield to experts on Jeeps, but modern overhead cam engines can easily go 200,000 miles if well-maintained. Again, my experience is mainly in German cars and road racing so I yield to the experts on Jeeps, but I imagine it still is a function of maintaining the fluids in the engine. Gaskets and other parts can and do fail from time to time, but engines are not what they were 50 years ago. Check the maintenance records of anything you buy. Question the owner. Does he or she seem like the type to take pride in and take care of a machine? (And don't be chauvinistic; some of the best maintainers of cars I have known are women!)

I appears you can expect a lot from a Jeep. But like a race car or an airplane, maintenance is key to keeping them from surprising you with a failure when you don't want it.

Good luck!

I would also try and get the 6 cyl. instead of the 4 cyl. you will have more power and still get around the same amount of gas mil. because the 4 cyl. will just work harder to push the jeep and burn just as much gas.
Where did all the money go? Ohh yeah thats right.
