Techniques for finding noises.

So I've got a pretty common problem... There's a chirping sound coming from somewhere around my serpentine belt, but I'm not sure where. I try to listen as closely as I can, but I don't like putting my head that close to a running engine.

So I was wondering... what tricks to you guys use to find noises? I've heard of things like holding a rubber hose up to your ear, spraying WD40 in strategic places, using a stethoscope... What works and what doesn't?
Roads? Where we're going we don't need... (puts on sunglasses)... roads.

I just test weak points where I think the noise could be coming from. If its coming from the front of the engine take your water pump pulley and pull it away from the block, towards you and see if it has play. It could be a bad water pump.

I've got a Stethescope, with a 16" probe for localizing sounds, at there source and I've used it to trace bad lifters and rockers-and ticking valves !

I use a long screw driver. Put the tip on the spot and put your ear to the handle. Be careful

Take one sense away by closing your eyes, lol.
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could.

If it's coming from the engine area there are a couple of simple things you can do right off the bat.

1: Make sure the belt is tight and in good condition.

2: Remove the belt and hand spin idler pulleys and others to check for excess play or restricted movement.
