They will just be building them somewhere else, they aren't going away forever.

I know this is not a political forum, and not a forum limited to citizens of the USA, but here is the real problem:

"They will just be building them somewhere else ....", as said by oilwell1415.

Where in the world might that be? Magna International has manufacturing facilities on every continent except Antarctica.

Am I understand this correctly. They are shutting down one plant in NY. After manga ran the company into the ground. Lol.

If you had read the article you would know that they are sending the equipment to Mexico and Indiana. As for other locations and why they are being sent there, I suggest you ask these two guys:

I don't think Magna ran it into the ground, I think they moved production to more profitable facilities with the goal being to close this plant.

I just meant how the company made profits for around 100 years and shortly after they bought it they were losing over 100 million and had to make cuts. I agree about closing the plant though.

Gotcha. I thought you meant they didn't know what they were doing.

Sucks though, everyone around here knows someone who used to work there. It'll feel weird driving down "New Venture Gear Drive" and the plant being shut down.

Here's what happened:

[For the early history, read this:
New Venture Gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
also some other gear-head info there]

New Venture Gear is profitable for a while but when it looses a couple big contracts (GM for one) Daimler Chrysler decides NVG is not worth keeping. Keep in mind that Daimler Chrysler was in the driver's seat.

Lots of jobs about to be lost.

2004 - Magna International steps in as the white knight and buys controlling interest in NVG, renames the joint venture New Process Gear, Inc. Lots of jobs saved.

2007 -- Daimler Chrysler is out.

Magna says profitability is not high enough, Magna wants employee concessions. Unionized office staff and engineers say ok, unionized production workers say no.

So Magna shuts the place down, now the owner of NPG's patents and intellectual property. Magna breaks up production lines sending some equipment to other plants in Indiana and Mexico and auctions off what it doesn't need. (By the way, the article does not say transfer case production will be in Indiana and Mexico, only that some equipment was sent their.)

Bottom line: Within an 8 year period Magna raids and eliminates competition, jobs lost.

If you'd like to see what else Magna's been up to in recent years, go here:
Powertrain Systems | Magna International Inc. | Magna International Inc.

In the interest of disclosure, I do not, and never have worked for any of the above named companies or their affiliates. I know of only one person who has, and they're a distant relative.

No, I don't have anywhere near the knowledge of the situation or company to make that kind of accusation lol.
