The Ghetto Paint Protection Thread...

OK, so I saw something that I liked whilst cruising the web and thought....Hmmm, I could do that for a fraction of the cost...

These... According to the site, they are course surfaced vinyl... I thought "hmmm... Stair Tread"....Why not?

So, without further ado... Part ONE!
The Ghetto Paint Protection Mod:
I wanted to make them for the tops of the fenders and for the windshield pillars.....

First go down to Home Depot and get yourself some of that 3M Outdoor Tread for like $19.99

Depending on how you want to do it.... Make a template to transfer over to the tread.

Mark and cut (from the backside) your tread

And since you'll want one for the other side, flip it over and mark the backside of the next one....

Use the same technique to make the A pillar protectors...

Clean the surfaces that you will be applying the tread to with soap and water first... I always go back over the cleaned area with some sort of solvent to be sure... Here I'm just using good old paint thinner...

Part TWO...

Apply your tread, and Bob's your uncle.... Paint protection for your fender tops and your windshield frame... I made some for the lower part of the windshield hindge too.... Just use the same technique listed above... It looks just like the ones pictured on that website...The whole thing cost me $20 plus tax... This stuff is HEAVY, sorta like half the thickness of srpay in bed liner and should take care of any scratches one could encounter.

All finished and lookin' pretty sharp...

Is there enough material on those rolls to cover the entire top of the fender? I really dig your rig man. I love that interior.. I am now planning the exact same mod eventually... but i may use CADPAT or MARPAT that is a little more green.

YOu can also try Grip-Tape found at skateboard shops. Its usually about 14" wide. I'm sure you can have it cut to any length that you want as well.

Nice mod though Cain!

Sounds good...saddly, the stuff I used is only 4 inches wide... Plenty wide enough for what I wanted. Once the hood is down, you can't see the area on the very front of the fender it didn't cover. Plus, it's gonna be good for keeping tools and parts from scratching up the fenders when I work on it.

I couldn't believe how freakin' sticky that stuff is! OMG! I ruined one because I didn't get it down just right. When I pulled it off...GEEZ! I was afraid it was going to take the paint! But it didn't
