Thinking about buying a wrangler

Hi, I could use a little advice. I'm thinking about buying a wrangler and I have a couple of questions that I haven't found good answers for and thought maybe you can answer.

1. long bed vs. short bed. Is there a difference in ride, safety and handling? I havent driven short one.

2. i will primarilary drive into the city and am thinking about auto instead of standard, is that a good idea?

3. are 06 wranglers high maintenance or do you just drive them and change the oil?

4. anything I should know while talking to salespeople?

thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum pal. Do you mean unlimited (long wheelbase) vs. the short wheelbase jeep? Well the LWB (long wheelbase) will ride a little better and be a little more comfortable while also giving you more room in the back for your stuff. You won't sacrifice much offroad ability by getting the unlimited either. I've seen many unlimiteds do great offroad. There are pros and cons for the swb and lwb offroad. Example- lwb will give more stability when climbing and on rocks but more likely to get highcentered. Swb will be less likely to highcenter but will be less stable. Swb ride just a little rougher and don't have as much room to carry your junk.

Getting an automatic is fine. There is nothing wrong with that. Especially if you will be driving in the city.

I wouldn't say the wranglers are that high mantenance. (Besides the fact that you will want to modify it ) They are not real high maintenance but they still require your usual stuff like oil change and tire rotation. Like any other vehicle you will have to have certain checks at certain miles which is normal.

Just make sure you don't pay too much. I got my 06 X for just under 20K with air conditioning (most if not all of them come with them although it isn't standard) and hardtop along with a tire and wheel package uprade to the ecco wheels with slightly bigger tires.

If it were me, I'd want the auto, and the 6 cyl. If you can get it for under 20 k, I think you will be doing well. I prefer a SWB, but if you want that long sucker, there is nothing wrong with it.

I don't know if you can get a Wrangler for under 20k, now. There are no more 2006's at all in my area, so I don't know exactly what they are going for. The price may have dropped a bit with the release of the 2007, but it may have gone up also.

Good luck, and welcome to WF!

Welcome. For comfort and mainly street use, I would go with the unlimited with the auto trans.

Thank you. I'm really psyched because I've always wanted a wrangler. I think I will go with the Unlimnited long bed, auto because of the ride, although I think the shorter one looks better. I was asking about the maintenance because when I mention that I'm thinking about a Wrangler a lot of people say something like, "Why are you going to get one of those, they always break".

My Wrangler is 13 years old and has never broken down. I've rolled it years ago and it still drove home.

I don't care for the Unlimited, but the men and women that have one seem very happy. I think they look slightly screwy, but please, don't let that stop you. It's a fine Wrangler.

They always break because we take them out and wheel the hell out of them. The 4.0L engine is a great engine and with the proper maintenance will last you more miles than most vehicles.

Only thing I can say about the unlimited and the 4 speed auto is that it seemed a little under powered compared to my swb Wrangler and the 3 speed auto. Just personal preference on my end. I don't need or want the lwb so maybe I was looking for things wrong with it when I drove it.

I'll do it.

As long as Jeeptales has been part of the forum, I have decided that he is, in my opinion, the most most knowledgeable and honest salesman I have known of. For example, I think I remember him speaking of an unnerving noise in 07 Wrangler. He was honest about it and took time to find the cause and correct it.

I would strongly consider purchasing a Jeep for this guy if I were closer to his area.

But watch out. When you leave his dealership you will have a strange urge to go to Sonic and buy a Peach Smoothie.

Hey
I'm sort of new to the Wrangler family and I am the happiest driving mine. I live in a big city and most of my driving is to get away from it on the weekends and longer trips as well. I would totally recommend the Wrangler! If you need a little space though I would go for an Unlimited. I wish I've done that. As soon as I can afford the change I am going for the longer wheeled based puppy. I have a 4x4 6cyl auto and love it. Good luck!

I got mine when they were running that employee pricing job in Aug. and it was a little over 20. I wanted a soft top and the unlimiteds all had hard tops so I didn't bother driving one...
