Thought I'd share a general automotive article about diesels.....

..... you know, just in case we ever DO get a diesel in the Wrangler. The Case for and Against Buying a Diesel Car | Fox Business

What do you folks think of all the points made in this article? Are there any pros/cons they forgot?

Cheers!

I had two diesel vehicles, and I will always take a diesel over a gasoline engine if I had the choice. The author is basically right about the pros and cons. The biggest downside of a diesel is initial cost, but you get what you pay for.

I remember back before I bought my Dodge Dually with Cummins, it was going to be my first diesel and I had the pre conceived vision that is was going to be a slow pig with lots of pulling grunt. Wow, was I way wrong...its a fast pig with lots of pulling grunt.

I'd pay the extra $5K for a diesel motor in Jeep...if is a Cummins.

I read an opinion (on the internet, so you know how much that can be worth) that modern diesel engines don't have the extreme longevity that we've come to expect from our older diesels. I still have a '96 F250 Powerstroke with 310,000 miles on it (LOTS of trailer-hauling miles), and I think it's just about broke in!

Any comments about modern diesel longevity?

Depends on who makes it.

Cummins ISF3.8
The ISF engine family is the newest addition to Cummins lineup of dependable engines. With exceptional performance, low weight, low operating costs, and the reliability and durability expected from Cummins, the ISF3.8 is ideal for light commercial vehicle applications such as trucks, vans, pickups, and utility vehicles. The ISF3.8 is the lightest and strongest engine in its displacement class and is the perfect choice for weight sensitive and space constrained installations above 3.5 tons GVW.
The ISF3.8 offers advanced thermal engineering, electronic integration, and a High Pressure Common Rail fuel system. In addition, a Cummins wastegate turbocharger is used for excellent performance across rpm range and improved response through higher low-end torque.
Currently available at Euro III and Euro IV emissions levels, the ISF3.8 offers high power and torque for an engine of this size and weight. Cummins utilized modular architecture to create the ISF3.8 with the capability to meet the world’s most stringent emissions regulations of today and in the future. Lower emissions levels beyond Euro IV can be achieved without sacrificing performance and with minimal impact on installation.

My 97 Ram with a cummins gets 18+ mpg, and when It was new it would push 21 mpg. I've never seen more than 17 consistantly out of the jeep, and recently its been closer to 15. I get 3 mpg more out of a vehicle twice the size!

If I could I would get a diesel motor in everything I bought. I also hear diesel motorcycles might be coming out in a few years... I'm excited to see how that goes...

But only 1/8 as much fun. You've gotta pay to play. Jeeps are expensive, but worth it.
