Tire Size Affecting MPG

ok so i know the changing to a bigger size tire will affect the speedometer. In my case, 27" tires to 31", i will be traveling about 15% faster than what it tells me.

My question is does the difference in tire size also affect the difference in how many miles it says i traveled?

im sorry but its hard to believe that my 4cyl is only getting 14mpg. its a manual and i would consider myself a conservative driver......most of the time...

please help

Yes changing the tire size will affect how the readout on the odometer moves. It should slow down if I am not mistaken.

Bigger wheels have a larger circumference , and travel more per revolution. The jeep is not going to auto-magically take that into account. So your mpg is going to show low. You would need to add in the percentage of difference in the circumference's to the mpg.

There are charts all over the internet that will tell you what speedo gear you need to offset the increase in diameter of the tires.

Google it as there is a calculator out there somewhere. I have 265's on mine where it is supposed to have 225's. The calculator says I am about 7% out meaning you would add 7% to you mpg calculation.

The 15% applies to your speed and to the distance travelled equally.

This is because the odometer is drive off the speedometer.

Best way to figure out exactly how far you've travelled is to get a GPS and do a few trips of many miles. Compare the odometer and the GPS log to see how far off you really are.
