Tire Size Question

A newb question here. I'm used to seeing tire sizes in the traditional format 275/45 R16....etc. I understand the measurements and know wht they mean.

When I look at Jeep tires...I also see tires listed in actual inches.....32" x 10.5".

How come tires for Jeeps are sold in different ways like that? If I wanted to put a 32" tire on a Jeep....is it best to buy the 32" tire, or find the equivalent measured the other way?

Thanks!

if you have a 15" wheel then the tire will be in inches...if you are using a 16" wheel then the tire is almost always listed in metric. it really makes no difference. it will depend on your wheel size. if you have 15's you'll be buying 32's...if you have 16's you'll probably be buying 265/75/16

Doc,

Jeep did this when they went to the Rubicon model because they wanted to be able to fit a larger sized tire on there and still provide enough clearance to not rub on the control arms and frame. They tried the 31/10.50/15, but it was too wide. So then finally ended up deciding on the 16" rim with the metric tire as it was just thin enough to clear all issues.
