tow strap question and steering issue

Hey guys, quick question for ya
I'm am getting a tow strap with hooks (finally)
and I have a lifted 97 TJ with a 3 inch FT lift and 32 inch BFG A/T's
I was looking at this tow strap

and its max vehicle weight is 5,000 pounds
isn't that a little close?
I have NO idea how much my Jeep weighs, but I just wanna make sure I don't get something that will snap (I am also getting D-ring shackles)

First of all DO NOT get a strap with metal hooks. Get a strap with closed loop ends and use a 3/4 inch or bigger shackle. Also, 5k is not near big enough. Get a strap rated for at least 20,000 pounds.

yeah thats what I thought
just wondering, why should I get closed loop ends instead of metal hooks? wouldn't it be easier to put the hook on the shackes?

Yep. You need one like this: http://www.quadratec.com/products/92144_502.htm

If the strap breaks under load it's going to sling that metal hook right back at you. Without the metal hook it will unload and fall straight to the ground (hopefully).

no I don't know where the factory tow hook are, they weren't on the Jeep when I got it

Try to find someone selling factory tow hooks and you'll be set. Otherwise you'll need an aftermarket bumper with weld through shackle tabs.

alrighty thanks

ANOTHER QUICK QUESTION please!
I got a huge wobble tonight, I drove off the road. Could it be because my alignment is off? I went over a bump at 55 mph and all hell broke loose. It started swaying side to side, and I had to slam on the brakes and stop. Could it be because of alignment? I have felt that when I slow down it sways left (I know that is because of the alignment)

well it is when your steering geometry is all ferkud up... do you have a drop pitman arm?

I didn't think I needed it since it was a 3 inch lift
I am confused whether it is bump steer or the DW
tonight I couldn't control the vehicle, it scared me

you need the drop pitman. go ask tiny or ccain or jpdocdave about it, they know more than me, but if i were you i would get that pitman arm, a grand cherokee one would suffice, loval junkyard?? like i said i never ran into the problem, ask them..pm something like that

My TJ did that. I had the drop pitman arm. But my steering stabilizer was shot. I found out the hard way not to forget about a new stabilizer when you lift it!

Got a nice heavy Rancho and it fixed it up.

I thought i only needed a drop pitman arm if it was lifting 4 inches or higher?

First off absolutely do not get a tow strap with hooks. Go on our local board www.azvirtualjeepclub.com and just ask in the wanted section if anyone has any front or rear stock tow hooks. Then get your self a strap like this.



Second off. What you experienced was Death Wobble not Bump Steer. Bump Steer will not make you feel like you just shit yourself in your own vehicle. Start off by making sure that all of your front suspension bolts are tight. Upper and lower control arms, trac bar (especially at the axle end), Steering components...... If that doesn't fix it then have the tires balanced again. Odds are that one of those scenarios is what is causing your problem.

Exactly^^. Get one of your friends to sit in the drivers seat and move the steering wheel back and forth while you look at the steering components. Have them slowly move the wheel back and forth and look and feel for anything that isn't right. You'll find your problem if you try all of this.
