I've done my research and homework on both of these, read reviews, watched a few YouTube's...

I'm looking for first hand experience from y'all Jeeperz!

I'd like to know what you use? Why? Your experiences, pros and cons, tips and tricks for recovery, mud, sand, rocks ect..

Want to have the best knowledge for pulling someone out, or being pulled out myself.

I have D-Rings front and rear on my TJ, with a Engo 10k winch, but after this weekend I'm a firm believer that you need straps, a winch has it's limits.

Post away! And Thanks!!

I carry both, and a winch. I have been yanked out of a stuck with both. A kinetic recovery strap (snatch strap) is much better for yanking recoveries. Works great. If towing a dead Jeep back to camp, use the tow strap.

More often than not, a quick yank will get us going again. Sometimes not, then the winch takes over.

I have a winch, and my recovery kit is a D Ring, Snatch Block, tow strap, and a tree saver. All of which I find I use regularly, sometimes not even on the trail.

When I broke down two trips ago, I had to winch down the side of a ledge to a turn around. Then using a snatch block, tree saver, and winch; I had to get the front of my jeep spun around facing down hill. Got the jeep down the hill, and needed the tow strap to get a tug to get the jeep fired off. (I fried the starter)

Week after that my hooker neighbor ran her car out of gas, so I towed her back to her house with the tow strap. :bop:

what are snatch straps made out of? I am in the process of weaving myself a tow strap out of 16 strands of 550 paracord. If it is plausable I would love to make myself a snatch strap too but I can't find any info on what they are made out of.

Is it bungee cord?

what are snatch straps made out of?
For elasticity, snatch straps are generally made out of nylon. Tow straps on the other hand, are generally made out of polyester.

Considering how much force is being applied, these are not do-it-yourself items.
Im assuming you are talking only about snatch straps. Tow ropes are easy I've made 2 in the past. the first one got a tiny cut in it when I dropped a saw on it by accident and the second got stolen that is the only reason i am having to make another.

Granted the forces are much higher with recovery straps but the first ones must have been made by hand, no one just decides to build a machine to produce something without ever making one by hand.

My club only use tow straps. Not because we think a kinetic on is bad, just a tow strap has more uses and seems to last longer.

I'm sure most everyone has felt the sudden hard jerk while being yanked, or yanking someone out of a pickle with a tow strap. Or, have seen the many videos of bumpers and axles being ripped off of rigs.
Back in the day, that's what we used before snatch straps became readily available and popular.
I'm not saying a snatch strap will give a you jerk and damage free recovery every time, but the difference is very noticeable.
I have a Masterpull Superyanker. Works great, and worth every penny.

For a snatch strap the recommended is 2-3 time the vehicle weight to get the right stretch. So for a jeep roughly 6-9 thousand pounds

I ended up going with a Master Pull Super Yanker.. 7/8" X 30' rated to 28,500lbs.. Haven't had a chance to use it yet.. But it came highly recommend.. Also picked up a 30' ARB tow strap & yes.. You wouldn't want to yank anyone with a tow strap.. Unless that's all you had.. It would break/bend something on one end or the other...

I'm sorry to be like this but u bought too strong of a snatch strap with a 4ish thousand pound jeep you won't be able to get any stretch out of that and it will be almost like another tow strap
