I'm about to buy a 2014 Wrangler unlimited sport with auto transmission and 3.73 gears. I need to verify I can tow my boat. Any hep appreciated.

Boat trailer GVWR: 2915

Tow capacity: 3,500

Based on the GVWR you are fine as long as you get one with at least 3.73 axle ratio. What is the pin weight? I think the hitch is rated for 350 lbs.

Good question. I can lift it. I need to put it on a scale at hitch height.

I did call U-haul and they said I was good to goo to pull their largest trailer.

Does it matter it I have one passenger or 5?

You are going to be pushing the legal limit once you start adding passengers........and fuel for the boat....and beer coolers.

It is the Beer coolers that will throw over the limit. I like the plural on the "beer coolers".

can't you just change the hitch out to a class 3 hitch from the wimpy class 2 and be good for 5k towing? add a trans cooler as well regardless.

Suspension may not be designed to handle the extra weight. Also being able to stop with extra weight is a serious safety issue to look at.

Yes. Mine has a payload of 850lbs. The 850 lbs is any weight you add other then the driver. For example, if you have a pin weight of 200 lbs. you have 650 lbs left for passengers and gear.

If you can lift tour trailer, you should be fine with the hitch (under 350 lbs). If I remember right boats have a light pin weight.

Hope this helps. I went through the same thing before I got mine. You are doing it right by researching before you purchase.

All I know is if you buy one down under it will tow 4400lbs. Compare Models - Wrangler Unlimited

Note above link is not for us models.

Same thing with the Wranglers from across the pond. The kicker seems to be required trailer brakes, and I believe a limited top speed

Kick out a passenger for more beer room if need be. Gotta keep the priorities in order.

trailer brakes might be a good option if you plan to tow often. if its just once a month short distances in good weather (who goes boating in bad weather) you are good to go.

I recently pulled my popup with a gross of 3,200 lbs, 4 passengers, and the back of the jku was crammed full of gear. The only difference was I have 4:10's. She pulled up a steep grade doing 80 mph with plenty of power to push it harder. Having the now standard trailer sway bar that new jk's come with I had zero sway from my camper. With my old truck and my wife's 07 Sequoia, I have to keep it under 65 in order to minimize the trailer sway. The only issue I had was that the trany liked to hunt for 3rd gear while climbing but that's where the auto stick came in handy. The auto stick was also very useful to down shift while coming to a stop since I don't have a brake controller.
I have a 2013 jkur. I hope this helps to ease your mind.
