Trail Gear - The Necessities

This is for all the experienced trail conquerors. We have a "How to Off-Road" thread, etc. But I'd like to see a list of items that a responsible Jeeper should have in their rig BEFORE going on the trail, any trail.

Any input is appreciated, I would just like to see all of these items mentioned in one thread for future reference. If one already exists .... my apologies.

Garbage bags - pack it in, pack it out.
Flash lights
Blanket or sleeping bag
Hammer (the thing you hit stuff with, not the rapper from the 90's)
Good pair of boots
Gloves
Shovel
Hatchet or saw
CB
Other rigs to wheel with (read: I wouldn't wheel alone)
GPS and/or Map & Compass

That's all I can come up with at the moment other than what's already been said.
**edit: I've not been hard-core wheeling yet, but these are things I'd want to take with me if I were. Also, it's stuff I'm regurgitating from other MUCH more knowledgable people in this forum.

If you have a winch its a good idea to bring a snatch block and a few short straps along. They come in handy if you ever have to drag someone off of a tree on a tight trail.

Add WD-40 and duct tape to that list

and some spare fuel/brake hose(obvious and multiple other uses)

and more to come once I think of them or go through my gear so that I can remind myself.

if there isnt one already, we should make a comprehensive off road checklist and get a moderator to turn it into a sticky. we have one in the other forum i belong to and it comes in handy when you are going on a sweet expedition. i still print that thing out and comb through it to make sure i dont forget anything.

some things ill add to this growing list:

shovel
sunblock
leatherman
zippo
power inverter
jb weld
a camera so you can post pics on the forum!

a good looking chick who digs getting stuck in the outdoors!

For me...

Water
A snack if I want
My Cell
A basic hand tool set
Straps
Trail spares!!!!

The worst stranded I can get here is 2 minutes away from another wheeler.

We dont have open country such as colorado, and the western states, so we dont need much. I expect theirs to be much different.

yes it all really depends on where you are wheeling for this list, im actually going to hit a trail tomorrow and its only about 4 hours (of riding) so the only thing i have is tow straps and a can of dip.

now if your going on the rubicon trail or something very much more serious and out in the middle of nowhere then you really must have more tools and gear with you. its like my old track days when i ran rally x with my suby.. we brough wheel bearings, cv's, axel, drive shaft, another front bumper and all kinds of things, so it all really depends on what your trip plan is.

I am guilty of not having one in my jeep but a fire extinguisher is a very good thing to have. I have seen two trucks catch fire while whelling, one was winching on me when I had goten a K5 Blazer stuck. His battery post melted and caught it on fire. We got it out with the help of several handfulls of dirt. The other time I watched an old power wagon burn up after being hung up in a mud hole and the guy driving it just kept his foot on the floor. The truck burnt up right after the tranny blew. It was a total loss.

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm planning on taking all the stuff in the replies & compiling it into one long informative post after a few weeks.

One of the little cyber crafting projects I like to do every now & then. Plus, it helps everyone in the process.

Ok that makes sense then, If I go camping its usually to deer hunt, I don;t have a secret cabin out in the woods or anything, I just pack my 2 man and some cooking gear, I do';t bother with food cause where I go is rabbit rich, squirrel rich and a lake near by throw everything else on the trailer and go. No cameras, no stands, just me a a tent in the woods, and a shotgun
Oh and a couple of coolers to put the deer in.
