Tranny pref for rock crawling

Hey everyone, I have an unlimited, basic stock with a manual tranny. I already did a 4" lift and 35" tires. Nothing else has been done at the moment. It's my daily drive for work and basic off road fun. But, right now I'm thinking about getting another used Jeep to perform extreme levels of rock crawling. What's the best type of transmission for rock crawling, manual for automatic?

Auto all the way!...no clutchwork involved. Manual is fun sometimes for driving, maybe even for trail riding. When your offroading style breaks over that line from trail riding to the more extreme wheeling the auto is in the spotlight.
Find yourself a cheap TJ with an auto transmission and start crawling. My TJ has a stick...someday I might do a swap though.

Automatic, without a doubt, is what you want for that. You can't walk the rocks nearly as accurately with a manual as you can with an auto; often times on the rocks you have to stop on a very precise spot to re-asses your line and you can't afford the roll back from releasing the brake. I know a lot of people will say that they do the sideways foot trick so they can use all three pedals but that just doesn't always cut it in the rocks. This is true for all types of obstacles, rocks, trees, or washouts. I'm not saying manuals can't do this stuff and I'm not trying to get an automatic is better than a manual thing started, I'm just using my personal experience.

Ok thanks all.. I just traded my 07 unlimited for a Sahara with auto tranny, but now I'm starting to think I got ripped off from the dealer. I was told there's lockers front and rear. Just found out on this forum that they don't come with it. I'm not a happy camper right now!

You all do know that the JK has hill assist and a no stall feature correct? I've crawled but nothing super serious in my 2010 and only used the clutch maybe three times. You can stand on the brakes in 4L and not stall while crawling. If you need to break in a precise spot, go ahead and then let off your breaks to see your JK hold your spot regardless of incline for 2 secs.
