Transfer Case problems?

I recently bought a used 04 Sport as a weekend driver/toy. From the get go I have had concerns with noises that I first mistook for transmission problems. I thought this was odd for a five speed with 115,000 miles, and as I turns out it wasn't the tranny. I did find the CV joint on the front shaft was shot, so I had it and the front ujoint replaced. Sounded like all my squeak problems were solved for about 20 miles, then distinctive squeaking again that was obviously associated with the front drive shaft. The guys who changed my cv joint thought I might have transfer case problems, so I drained it and put 50/50 mix of Lucas transmission treatment and mopar 4 fluid. Again all was well for about 30 miles, then the noise was back, and much worse if you shift to 4 wheel drive. SO, I got under it tonight and dropped the front shaft and drove it without it. Smooth as glass and quiet as a kitten. I hate not having the 4x4 but truthfully I never really use it, and I figure this way I can drive it til I figure out what to do about the transfer case. Junk yard? Rebuild? Is there ANY chance it could be something else simpler ( and cheaper) than a transfer case???
