transmission fluid leak - AX-5 or transfer case?

My U-Joint broke on my rear drive shaft so i disconnected it and took it to a machine shop to get repaired. I drove the Jeep on the front drive to get to the shop - stupid!!! i wasnt thinking at all that by driving with the rear drive shaft disconnected that i was going to leak transmission fluid out.

Now here is the question. i went to the AX-5 fill plug and when i opened it Oil came out - making me think that the AX-5 transmission is fine and full. Can anyone tell me where the oil that leaked out would have come from? would it have come from the transfer case with the rear drive shaft disconnected or would it have come stright out from the AX-5 transmission?

thanks for anyones help - really dont want to burn a transmission
