Transmission Question

I've owned several chevy 4x4's and whatnot and experimented with all walks of life, but looking to get into jeeps now. i got a jeep a boy is selling that has a blown transmission. whats the average cost to replace a transmission (rebuilt transmission and labor total)? its outa a 94 wrangler and its got 120k miles

If it's a manual transmission then its the AX-15, which i've found rebuild kits on ebay for around $150, so whatever labor is on top of that..

I will say that the AX-15 is not the best transmission out there, and you might look at just replacing it with something else all together.. just depends on your budget..

Well the manual transmission out of a TJ is a good one, i haven't researched prices on them though, the transmission is the NV3550 if you wanna look it up.. You will have to get a new transfer case as well, if you can find a wrecked TJ in a junkyard just take them both .

I wouldnt pass up a really good deal if i were you, whats this jeep got in it? any pics of it?

Thought id add the reason a lot of people forgo rebuild the AX-15 is that it chews through synchronizers faster than average transmissions..

Also for reference if you dont know, TJ refers to Wrangler model year 1997-2006
YJ is 1987-1995, they never made a 1996 model year wrangler.. and JK is the new wrangler 2007-present.

I have never found the ax15 to be a bad tranny. Several people use them to back V8s with no issues, the ax5 on the other hand is junk I wouldn't back the engine on my mower with it. The ax15 backs the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder while the ax15 backs the 4.0 I6. Do you know which trans the jeep you are looking at has.
