update on smittybilt tire carrier

If anybody cares I thought I would put out an update on the smittybilt rock crawler rear tire carrier if you are wondering about getting one, I installed it a month and a half ago and so far its great I did have a problem with the top vertical piece rattling but I just removed it and put some electrical tape around it and slid it back in the hole and no more rattle, I don't know if they have changed the design or beefed it up because it looks different than the older ones and it will not rattle, I do recommend putting the extra rubber bumper on the back in one of the holes that used to carry the stock tire carrier it will meet up with the tire carrier for a snug fit and no rattle, it is a complete pain and very frustrating installing it and you will need help but once you get it mounted it will definatley do the job, but be aware it's an all day job

I went with the Crown (Warn without the Ws) because of the Smittybilt's poor reputation. The Crown was a royal PITA to install too. Now that I have it on I'm quite happy with it. It fits so tight I have to use my foot on the swingout to close (latch) it. It has a kicker that closes up on one of the factory tailgate rubber bumpers as well, so no rattles, very, very tight overall.

Glad you like it, I knew that smittybilt had a bad rep but I actually slid back into a tree on the trail and cracked my stock one pretty bad I was carrying 33's so I went cheap cause I needed it, probably should have waited and saved up for something better but I am glad I got something that will work fine until I decide to get another one, this will work until I break it

I'm glad you are getting good service from it, and I can certainly understand your position. I was able to find the Crown bumper for 355 shipped by shopping around. Most places wanted between 450 and 500 for the bumper plus 100 or more to ship it.

I don't know why everyone has a beef with Smittybilt's bumpers. I have them, have no problems, nor do I ever expect problems. Period. The XRC rear bumper with the additional tire carrier package (the new one, not the old all-in-one unit) has been nothing but awesome. I have yet to see any other package for that price with the same offerings.

OP, do you have any pics? Is it the older model or the newer model. Here's the newer model (what I have):

XRC Rear Bumper System - Smittybilt

Six_Gun (or anyone else with an answer), how does the tire carrier handle a 33x12.5 15R on 15x8 wheels with 3.75" BS? My current tire carrier, a Bestop which mounts up to the tail gate, causes my spare to rub on the frame of the carrier and the wheel doesn't seat completely on the mount.

On the xrc rear bumper and tire carrier it is all adjustable I have a 33x12.5 R15 and there has been no issues yet. That is the bumper on my jeep.

Mine works fine with my Hankook Dynapro 33.6" tire on the stock spare carrier-

If you use the proper bumpstops and a bumper spare support, the gate works fine without hinge degrading

I added a gate shock for other reasons, but I'm sure it helps

My wheels have 4.5" backspacing and are bolted directly to the spare tire carrier-
