vacuum lines all wrong

ok i have a 89 jeep wrangler 4.2 carbed with auto trans. someone before me has changed the rotor to a ford 119 with electronic ignition. so here is my issue: the vacuum line to the vacuum advance on the rotor is not right. it is always on advance - im sure they didnt hook it up right. is there anyone with this set up that can help me.

2nd issue is that i want to make sure the rest of my necessary vacuum lines are hook up. im willing to drive to you to look at your jeep and how its hooked up. or clean direction would be great.

eventually i will be upgrading to a Weber carb but for now just want her running better.

let me know if you need more info and or pics thanks.

Well a vacuum advance works off an intake or carb base plate vacuum port.
It will have the most vacuum at idle. As the engine speeds up, the vacuum drops off, and the mechanical advance takes over on older style distributors.

Newer ones can use a combo of vacuum advance and electronic control, or straight electronic control.

From the sounds of it, yours is hooked up correctly.

As for the rest of the vacuum lines, open the hood and look up.
There should be a rather large sticker on the underside of the hood. It lists your engine info, and a vacuum line diagram.

If yours is missing the sticker, just Google "89 wrangler vacuum routing diagram"
And you get this.

Thank you for the info.

when i remove the vacuum from the distributer the idle speed drops off to an acceptable rpm. when i put the vacuum back on the rpm goes to 1100 at idle. that’s why i thought it was wrong.

again thanks for helping.

i have more questions on other vacuum lines but will be more specific with photos.

You may want to check the timing. If they swapped out distributors they could have the timing off, and it will affect power and idle speed.

Sounds like they hooked the vacuum advance up to the wrong source. There's full time vacuum like a port on your intake manifold where your power brakes hook up, and ported vacuum. Ported vacuum is one (but not just any/all) of the vacuum nipples on the carb. Ported vacuum will not give much or any vacuum when the carb's throttle is closed at idle, and it will slowly give more vacuum as throttle position and intake vacuum allow. That's where the distributor is supposed to be hooked up, so you're not getting vacuum advance at idle, only during cruise/light acceleration.

great advice for all!

ok update: i have not yet checked the timing, dont have a timing light yet and no one carrys them....odd. but ordered on so i will have soon :-)

ok so i pulled all the "beeb" vacuum lines off and found one that was on the carb with a "beeb" screw in it....uggg. got all the vacuum lines that i need hooked up and she is running so much better.

Still need to figure out the vacuum lines on the 4 wheel drive untill i put in the manual locking hub kit in. so if anyone has had to deal with that, post away :-)

Thanks again for the 4x4 diagram that helped out tremendously. Also for anyone else reading, I used fuel line in place of the hard plastic lines that can touch the exhaust manifold and melt (like mine did) the fuel line was easy to bend and will never melt :-).
