Welder questions

I'm looking to buy a welder and am looking for opinions. I want a 220 volt MIG with GAS. Would like info on brands, type and thickness of wire, types of gas to use and how much for a bottle and how long it lasts. I plan on using it mainly for 1/4" steel or less.

Thanks

Mig Welder

I bought a millermatic 135 which is a 120v machine rated for 3/16". The 175 is rated for up to 1/4" and is 240v. The thing I liked about the miller versus other machines is the infinite adjustability on both voltage and wire feed. Not just 4 different settings on the voltage.
My 2 cents,
SandToy

We have a miller 210 in the shop. It has not given us any problems at all. It says it will weld 1/2" in a single pass and I'm about to test that out It welds like a dream for almost any sized metal you can think of. It was a bit pricey though.

That machine will perform as it states. They are a bit heavy on the wallet, but that Miller is a helluva welder. Same with their plasma cutters.

I think we had 1200 in just the machine plus a bottle. We bought a bottle to keep cost down on refills. Plus a 300 dollar miller welding helmet and gloves and mig pliers and the list goes on

Not really. They have some units that are more expensive.

if your looking for a little 220 unit for the house i use a lincoln sp 170 t with .25 wire on straight carbon dioxcide (small 50lb cylinder) with 4 amp/volt settings and infanite wire speed . rated for 3/16 but with proper metal prep (beveled edges/tappers)1/4 easy . you can do alot of welding at home on that size of bottle . i bought mine along time ago welder/bottle/regulator/10lbs wire $500.00 im am sure prices have changed since! anyway thats my 2 cents

I have the lincoln sp135plus and it uses 110 ac for power with infinite adjustments for both wire and heat, cost is about 600.00 and i highly recommend it.
