As long as it's not chaseing me out of the mudhole with flashing lights, it would be OK. Might find yourself trying to where everybody is at in the woods if they see you coming, they'll scatter.

I've seen a number of ex-cop Cherokees. The only "police" wranglers that I have seen are for the US Border Patrol.

I've seen a bunch of border patrol with them
they would be pointless for highway and street use though, because their slow
but their mighty!
but they use them a lot here for border patrol

Impersonating a police officer is illegal, and from what I heard it goes the same for the vehicles. I remember my dad telling me about a friend that had a police theme bronco, they made him change it. Think it was the police like insignia on the side that they dident like. You can always just contact your local police station and ask them. Im sure they would have a list of things you can/cant have done to the vehicle.

There is a guy down the road from my grandfathers that has an 88 Mustang GT that used to be a California Highway Patrol car. It still has the roof lights and paint job and spot lights... just no decals. I think thats the point at where it becomes illegal.

I'm sure using a similar paint scheme is not illegal. But you might draw some negative attention by the local law enforcement. If you badge it or put aux lights of any kind on it, I'd bet you'd get immediate attention. There's just way too many cooks out there and johnny law might think your one.
In Cali the old CHP cars are auctioned off and they'll paint the white door black but not the top. I've had these pull up behind me on the hwy and it'll raise your blood pressure.

i know any type of strobe light or any lighting that remotely mimics a law enforcement vehicle is strictly prohibited and is worth a count of impersonating an officer.

Border Patrol here in AZ actually do use TJ's. We are all pretty proud of that fact here.
