What exactly does towing package mean?

First, I'm sorry if this has been asked before. But I have been wondering if I was under the wrong impression, or if everyone else is.....

My understanding is that the towing package means that the Jeep is equipped from the factory with tow points, i.e. hooks on the front and rear bumpers.

I get the feeling from many posts that it is a common assumption that the towing package means it should have a hitch and be able to tow stuff.

Does anybody know for sure what exactly Jeep means when they build a Jeep with the "towing package"?

Thanks!

Towing package has nothing to do with tow hooks which are "recovery points". A tow package means you get a hitch and wiring harness, stiffer springs, and a trailer sway dampening feature.

Sometimes, depending on the vehicle, it means you get a bigger radiator and cooling system, larger alternator, lower gears, larger signal relay to handle more turn signals along with the stuff mentiond above. If you do have a tow package it always includes the biggest hitch your vehicle it rated to tow and the rear harness point to plug in trailer lights.

See, cause my window sticker says I have the towing package, and I didn't have a hitch, or light harness, or any of that stuff. And not all Jeeps come with the recovery point hooks...

I thought the tow package on TJs usually meant that it was equipped with a rear D44.

Ahhhhhh Stupid nomenclature.... This is when it pays to actually read for yourself instead of taking someones word for it..

I have the "Fog Light, Tow hook Package"....

Never Mind...

Thank you all for helping me clear that up, and as usual, everyone else is right, and I am retarded!

I've got the 07 X with towing package. The differences between my X and a normal X is i've got a rear D44, 4.10 gearing, and a tow point in the rear to fit a hitch. The others jeeps (minus Rubicon) in the 07 model are geared 3.73, no trailer hitch, and have D35. Every X model I have seen has "recovery points" if you want to call them that lol! I don't tow, but I do use my rear hitch as a rear recover point. I however have no slushbox cooler. My auto will melt and blow up like all the other JK's lol!

When I got my jeep, I didn't know anything about it. So I went over everything and checked what I had, vs. what came stock. Those were the differences I found. If you've got a rear hitch, and slightly lower gearing, prob 3.73 stock, I'd say you have a tow. A beefier rear axle than a 35 would help confirm that. If I remember correctly, you're turning 3.23 or 3.07, so I would put my money on your jeep being a standard sport, or x model.

Another thing I did soon after I picked my jeep up was I ran my VIN number at a dealership. I got a printout of everything from axles and gears, to TC case info. They'll let you know what's up. It's free and only took about 5 minutes.

all JKs come standard with a D44 out back, and a D30 up front. the exception being the rubicon which gets the D44 up front instead of the D30

I've seen D35's on on a couple 07's before. Only 2 door models though, which I have. I think only the early 07's have the D35, but they are out there. Maybe you're thinking of an Unlimited? Every Unlimited I've looked at had a D44 on it.

jeep website says all of em are supposed to have D44s as stock out back. cant remember exactly where i found that, but its there some where. would say its possible for some left over TJ D35s to have been used, but those are to narrow and have a different bolt pattern
