What is my Jeep worth? Tax purposes.

Its finally time to register my TJ after my boss previously let me drive it around for a few months registered in the company's name.

Its an 03 SE with 142k miles. In the state of CT you cant put a b/s amount on the bill of sale to evade taxes, only on vehicles over a certain age. I bought the jeep for $2800, but Im afraid if I put that theyll go to blue book value and charge me extra taxes. What would be a safe amount to put on the bill of sale? Im thinking $4000, is that too high? low?

Theres no pics bc all the dmv goes off of the title info.

Just want some opinions

KBB says (and I totally guessed on condition) anywhere from $5500 to $7100... so I bet 4k wouldnt raise any eyebrows

I just bought my 97 tj sport with 100k for $6300 back in September. Im pretty sure they go by KBB value, I ended up paying something like $456 I think it was and im in CT also.

Take them in a bill of sale, signed on company letterhead, stating the actual price. Betcha they don't even bother you then.

Im thinking I might try that, but if they go by kbb ill probably end up paying tax on 5500. I mean its not that much more, but why pay an extra $100 to the dmv with all their fees and crap.

Oh ok so you know how much of a nightmare the DMV is here. Did you put 6300 on the bill of sale or did they automatically go to the blue book value?

Thats not a bad idea, maybe if I get it notarized they wont have a problem. Ill check our dmvs site and see what my options are

The seller had wrote out a bill of sale saying it sold for $6300, but I asked the lady at the dmv if it goes off the KBB an I forgot what she said but its similar to it

Damnit. Oh well. Hey, how is the winsted DMV? I wanted to go there to avoid the long lines in bridgeport and hamden. I live in ansonia, so itll be a little drive, but Id rather have a nice drive north and have a minimal wait opposed to driving 20mins to the dmv and waiting in line for 1hr.

Probably true market value. It sucks because I know how people put down ridiculous amounts for prices they paid to avoid taxes, but then when people ACTUALLY pay a low amount they try to get extra taxes off you.

I'm from CT also I'm pretty sure they just go off kbb value now but not positive. And do not go to Wethersfield DMV whatever you do.
