What is this knob?

I picked up my first Jeep which needs work.

Can anyone tell me if the knob in the picture is a vacuum knob for a locker for the front axle? If so how does it work?

I know if I push in the red button I can pull/push the knob to engage/disengage something. It also turns but I don't know if turning it does anything.

I ask because the front axle U joints are clanking. When I push in the red button and pull the knob out the clanking stops. However with it pulled out, when I turn the steering hard right or left the front end sounds like it's going to snap off and I can barely move the jeep.

Thanks,
Chris

It looks like the Posi Lock cable system for the front axle CAD system (Center Axle Disconnect). When you push the button and pull the cable it locks the passanger side 2 piece axle together and when you push the button and push in the cable it un-locks it.

The Posi Lock system replaces the vacume system that came stock on your Jeep. As far as your clanking it sounds like you have broken u-joints and when you pull the cable and put power to the front axle in 4WD the u-joint is binding up.

Let us know what you find.

It would be my guess that it is a cable for the front lockers. Try to see where it goes.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I will be working on the front end this weekend and let you know how everything works out.

While I have everything apart I'm going to do new ball joints and tie-rod ends while I'm at it.

Never done front-end work like this before. Should be fun!!!
