What mods give the best power? & what's the mystery clifford box?

So I'm pretty happy with the power that I'm getting out of the 2000 4.0, BUT I could stand to use a bit more low end power, and also, I took it on a highway trip, and it wasnt too pleased with cruising at 75mph... SO I'm concidering simple power mods, such as intake, headers, muffler, chip. BUT i'd like people's 1st hand experience. With the old 4runner, non of the mods did a thing, lincoln town car, mods made it almost a real hot-rod, 911, kind of difference. POINT being, I'd hate to do the old thing that I'm sure many of us have done and spend a lot to get more power without getting much more. Also, some of the advertisements show K&N intakes producing 12 hp at 4k rpms (oh, the previous owner already put in a drop in K&N filter, so would that be just about as good as a full intake system?), but I dont bring my jeep up that high, so is there anything that helps from 1.5-3k rpms, or should I just appreciate what I have?
Lastly, under the dashboard I have a small (headphone?) jack that says clifford, and a small computer box that says clifford as well. What are those? I looked at cliffordperformance.net and didnt see it.

What size tires are you running... gear change would be best bang for your buck.

I'm running 31x10.5x15 and once they get low on tread I was concidering going to 32 or 33's. The Jeep seems to be geared pretty high for a truck or wheeler, but then again, the 4 low is as low as I'd like. but to not even be at 2k rpm in 5th gear unless I'm going pretty fast is unusual to me. What is the stock ratio at 2hi for a 2000 4.0?

auto or 5 spd?, whoop never mind.. just read... you have the nv3550 5spd.. axle gears most likey 3.73. trans in 5th... 0.78

4Jeepn, thank you very much for your speedy imput. what range of gears would you concider... thinking 4.11's also with the potentiality of 32s or 33's in the pic.

other than gears, would anybody recomend intake/headers/muffler/chip? or are those kind of things just not too helpful with a Jeep?

Few things to consider: 1st what rear axle do you have? dana 44 metal square fill plug, dana 35 round plastic fill plug. Dana 35 is weak axle and does not like lower gears and bigger tires. dana 44, your good. I would jump to 4.56's with 33's and I ran 35's with them. However 1st confirm what gears you have. Going to 4.11's from 3.73 is not a big jump and I don't think you would see the gains you want.

Bum deal, I have the dana 35, is it quite normal to have some oil push out when you push the plastic cap? Not much, but enough that you can see?

Sounds about right.. as when filling you wait till a bit of oil is overflowing to cap it. If you want to, get a new cap..

so with that rear end, am I all done with any mods and should just be happy with it the way it is? Are 31's ok on there? Similarly, when I start from a stop I hear some scratching(?) noise and some spooling down noise when I come to a stop/engine to an idle. I just assume that it's the transfer case doing it's thing and it's not a big deal, am I correct in that, or should I really look deeper into it?

I just put a Flowmaster 50 exhaust on my Jeep and it did not help performance in any way shape or form. It does sound nice though.

How do you increase power?

Stickers... lots of stickers... Put em under the hood and you'll get more horse power. Put some on the sides and you get more speed

doclouie, let me know if the flowmaster helps with gas mileage. in the past I've been able to bring my Lincoln Town car from 6/10 mpgs to 16/24 mpg. The vw camper from 8/12 to 12/18 mpg, same mods seemed to have brough the 4runner from 19 to 16mpgs... any things that help the wrangler with mpgs such as removing the throttle body heater/ catalytic converter/ exhaust/headers/ram air? I wont go the route of smaller tires though.

You should not be in 4WD on dry pavement.

Clifford? likely something from
www.clifford.com - alarm.

on power - its a Jeep, its not going to have tons of power. accept this fact and you'll be a happier person.

on MPG - have you noticed the shape of the wrangler? its a box. Box's have trouble being aerodynamic. Lack of aerodynamics make good fuel economy difficult. (worsened by the weight, engine, etc)

Daggo66, I've been in 2hi on the pavement, but to my slight glance down at it, it kinda looked like the transmission goes to the tranfer case then to the rear drive shaft, buuuuut I didnt look that close perhaps, and if it's not the transfer case, then my transmission is making lots of noise, I'm ok with that if it's a healthy transmission, and that's just how it sounds, but are Jeeps just noisy in the running gear?
Mr. Carcrazy, I understand about the aerodynamics and power... but I was hoping that I was misunderstanding it all.... around town the power is all that I'd like, but at highway speed, I am left with more to be desired. I start to feel bad when I'm on the highway with the top off, it must take a lot to push that windshield and grill down the road so fast. I actually got better mileage with a wheeling trip involved with city driving while topless than i did with highway driving with the top on. weird. 16 to 15 mpg respectfully.
OH, now that the transfer case is in question and I'm already asking too many newb questions: how do I/can I? switch my 4wd from part time to full time? Is that something that the Jeep decides upon itself?

Full time 4wd is all wheel drive, its not exactly the same as true 4wd.

In a Wrangler you must decide when 4WD is necessary.

Jeeps are noisy. if you push the clutch in and the noise goes away, then its likely "normal".

Do you have the 4cyl or 6? most ppl in 6's don't complain about power. I've recently read a few w/ the 4cyl changing their fans to Electric, and they report more power at highway speeds. I've considered doing this mod for the 6cyl, as E fans are good IMO.

Thanks Mrcarcrazy, SO, the question was about when I was out on a dirt road and I was not too well controlled in 2hi, but I could have gotten by, so I put it in 4hi, and a few times in 4 low, but both in hi and low it read on my dash as "Part time" with "Full time" being unlit next to it. Is there a way to tell my Jeep when to switch from part or full, or will it just decide when I need that much traction?
With the noise, it seems to always be around, even at idle, I had a friend who is also a mechanic drive it, he is certain it's a rattly catalytic converter, but I'm not too sure it is... but I could hear it rattling from down the street... One way to describe it I guess is if you've had the airbox and maybe the whole intake tube off to the throttle body (in some cars/trucks, I havent done this on the Jeep) and the engine then sounds loud and scrapie, that's how I'd describe this. Also, the power I'm not impressed with is from 65-75mph, it is hard to move it in 4th and wont in 5th, now if I have a clogged cat, that'd probably do just the trick to give me more power, but if it's an aero dynamics thing I understand that. Electric fan sounds good. Also, i read that the 4.0's have a top speed of 115mph, I dont know how mine could get above 85...

you can not get a 4.0 to 115 mph. i would say about 100 mph downhill is about all the laws of physics allow

Sounds normal... probably hearing the synchros in your tranny (spooling down noise) or something related to that and the scratching noise is most likely the throwout bearing.

From what I understand, the transfer case is always in partial use (thus can be making noise) even in 2wd for the reason you mentioned above...the transmission outputs into the t-case and from there is splits the power off between the front driveshaft and the rear depending on what you have it set for.

The 4wd system used by our Jeeps is a part-time 4wd system...no matter what the conditions are, you will only see part-time lit up on the dash and you can't "set" it for full-time...nor will the Jeep switch over. I'm guessing it's a semi-universal gauge cluster and in some vehicles that have full-time 4wd, they probably have those same gauge clusters in them...ie Jeep Liberty perhaps.

I've done just about every under the hood bolt- on upgrade there is to do except for headers. Here's my $0.02
Cold air intakes are nothing but snake oil!
62mm throttle body (Hesco) helped a bit
BEST bang for the buck? Get rid of your motor driven fan!![/B][/B] Replace it with an electric and you will free up about 5 HP AND better gas mileage
