What would my fellow Jeepers do!

Well,

I was at the local Jeep dealership, and they offered me a great deal on my truck if I trade it for a 2013 Rubicon. I have to say, I'm torn. I currently have a 2006 Dodge cummins and a 92 YJ. I love both of them. I DD my YJ most of the time with the occasional play. If I traded my truck it would be time to sell the YJ and go to one vehicle. I really want the Rubicon though. Just can't quite pull the trigger!

I NEED my fellow jeepers to push me over the ledge one way or the other.

Make your truck your daily driver. Spend what you would spend on payments on the YJ and build one crazy ass jeep. Your truck has plenty of power to tow it to places to go play. And if you break on the trail. You can still go home towing your jeep.

I like the fact that my trail rig dose not have to get me to work on monday morning. but there is something to be said about arrive and a drive wheeling. I would still keep the truck and turn the YJ into a full on toy

I'd trade for the 10th Anniversary edition Rubicon, but I don't think they are available yet.

For the hassle and money you'd go through to get the 2013 you could have a custom, personalized, YJ buggy that would embarrass a stock Rubi.

I was in a similar situation in 2007.

I had a truck I hated... POS S10 ZR2...
and a well built '71 CJ5.

I decided to sell both and get a dual purpose rig: DD and moderate offroader.

I was minutes away from buying a leftover new '06 LJ Rubi... then the dealer started nickel-diming me on the price he originally agreed on my truck.
Pissed me off and I walked... he lost a $27K sale over $500...

A week later I bought an 05LJ with 10K miles, for $17,9
Traded the truck, sold the CJ two months later.

So my LJ was not a Rubi, but I could live with that.
I added $3500 in lift, wheels, tires, bumpers, sliders, and skids.

It has been doing DD duty ever since, with occasional moderate offroading.

I have no regrets in moving from a DD truck and trail toy, to a single dual-purpose rig.

It is a tough decision... Good Luck!!

I will be buried in my YJ. For some reason we are attached and it won't be any different in ten years. We wheel with others who have the newest Jeeps and my wife is always asking maybe we should get a new one. That would leave with nothing to do but wash and wax and that is not me. Love working on my truck and my YJ I don't think it will ever change.

^^ this!

if you're itching to get a new rig... why not just trade the truck in for a 2dr sport? i would bet more than half of the folks that get a rubi remove the stuff that makes it a rubi anyways...

yeah the gears are nice, so are the lockers and the d44 upfront... but it's not enough to justify the difference in price.

I traded my built 72 CJ 5 and my wife's 97 TJ for an 08 JK for my wife. She likes the JK on road, but I WILL not take a vehicle that I am making payments on off-road. I have my 1995 YJ and I have 33's, 4.88 gears and just had front and rear Eaton e-lockers installed and a Super 35 kit. You'll have to pry my YJ out from under me. My wife likes her JK, but still misses the CJ to play in (she really doesn't miss the TJ at all), so I made my rust free, clean YJ into a full on capable trail rig that has the same capable locking diffs that a Rubicon has for under $3000...parts, labor, etc. I'm still not sold on the JK, and I own one. Too much like a car, and the sheet metal is alot thinner than a YJ or TJ, plus I've been on trails too narrow for a JK, but not YJs or TJs.

As stated above, I would keep the truck to tow to long distance off road excursions with the YJ...You can always do local runs with the YJ without a tow rig, and build a nice rig out of your YJ and be money ahead.

how much time/money do you spend working on both vehicles. and do you love working on things? i currently have 3 vehicles in my personal stable. which i work on more than i want to. i'm trying to build a family and a career, i'm going to turn my back on the multiple vehicle approach. somehow i think my wife might be mad when i'm changing control arms all day on my car while she's taking care of the baby.

Either go with the first suggestion or sell the truck and get a fleet of YJs. Then mod em all a lil different, problem solved

My voice of experience, keep your truck! I traded my 12 year old truck for my JK all the while my wife was trying to get me to buy the jeep outright and keep the truck. Many times I wish I would have listened to her but my reasoning was two people don't justify 3 vehicles. Every time I go to get some home project material I miss my truck. Now I'm looking for a just right trailer to haul stuff in.

Well,

I value your guys input SO much! This did help make my decision. I blew the dealer off and made a road trip to Oklahoma and came back with a pair of D60s. 5.38 gears, locked F/R, High steer, Chromos and a couple of other goodies were thrown in! My other half is on board with my build!

Have a 8.8/D30 up for sale along with some less than 4000 miles 35" KM2s very soon.

I would love that but don't want to fork out the cash for one. I do have access to a complete 350TBI truck that isn't going anywhere. I might do that next winter. I also looked into 5.3L, but everyone I've contacted on a setup has blown me off or wants $3500 for a 4l60e/5.3 so screw that.

I for one think you made a real smart move. You can have an awesome machine for play / pleasure and not add another payment. I'm afraid hard times are coming, more than we have seen yet and I am working at getting debt free before things get real bad. I have worked hard for many years and don't want to loose what I have worked for this far to be lost in foreclosure.
