What Wrangler to buy???

I'm buying my first Jeep in about a month or 2 and just wondering if there's any bad years I should stay away from. I heard 2006 had alot of problems. Also, this will be a daily driver, but I will build it up for rock crawling in the future, so are the TJ's easier to work on than the LJ's? I'm looking at around the 2004 mark but may go later into the Tj's. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the Forum

First the LJ is a TJ Unlimited. Other than a few extra inches in the tub, they are the same.

Second you have been misinformed about the 2006 having a lot of problems. There were a few Wranglers built between certain dates in 05 that had an issue with the opda. There was a recall issued to fix that problem.

Give us an idea of what your budget is and that will narrow down the choices a bit. Try to buy as close to stock as possible so that you know what you are getting. An overly built (modified) jeep had probably been driven a lot harder than a stocker. Buying stock also allows you to build it the way you want while making sure that it is done properly.

When you find something you like post up the info and we can give you a heads up on items to look out for.

My max is about 18k, but it would be nice to get down around 15k. I want something with around 50k in miles. I've been looking and 2004 is around my price range. But I'm also debating on getting something around 12k and having the extra money to dump into it, but I don't want to keep fixing things along the way. I'll save that for the trail.

Sounds like you'd be happier with a bone stock Jeep that you can modify to your heart's desire. Stock is more likely to have no off road abuse. I bought stock 03 X with 12k miles and the doors/ hardtop had never been taken off. The idea is to keep it for the kids and beyond.
If you buy someone else's mods, you may end up having to replace them anyway, or just want to change it to suit your taste. Think about locking differentials-if you think you will do serious climbing, go for the Rubicon as the starting point. It'd be silly to replace good axles because you didn't get lockers in the beginning. That will be an expensive upgrade.
