What's this clunk- or, why am I sucking at standard

I learned how to drive on an automatic, and I don't know jack about transmissions and clutches and what not.

Sometimes, when I shift into second or third, I get this loud clunk from the front of the jeep once I take my foot off the clutch. Kind of sounds like something hitting..something else, I guess.

What the hell am I doing wrong?

Next mod: my driving skills.

With your description the only thing I can come up with is you aren't matching the revs...but this is based on what I'd call "very limited information".

Can anyone else drive it w/o this happening?

Yeah, you just have to practice.. it becomes second nature after a month or two. Just don't ride that clutch.. remember, it's not a brake.

Your goal is to be so smooth with the brake, gas and clutch that a passenger can't tell when you hit or release the pedals. But that takes time.

If you're unsure if the sound is from your inexperience, or something from your Jeep's dark side, get a more experienced driver to do a few miles.
