Nah... a Jeep can't be a car because cars can comfortably transport people, go fast, get good gas milage, or exhibit other car-like qualities.

It can't be a truck because trucks can pull boats, carry loads of mulch, fly rebel flags, or do other truck-like tasks.

It can't be a SUV because although it's great for sport, there's no utility (my kid has to sit on the spare if I pick up a gallon of milk from the store).

It just has to be a Jeep because it's completely impracticable yet still bada$$. I mean how many other vehicles can do this...

No car or truck let's you go topless and doorless and has the ability to take you anywhere you want to go all rolled into one.

No car or truck can be modified in so many ways that it would be possible for no 2 to be the same.

As far as I know there is only one thing that a Wrangler can't do...Win a Race.
I could easily win a race against the fastest cars in the world. I'd even let them pick the first 9 miles of the 10 mile course

No way is it a car has to many capabilities, it's not a truck as it can tow you need a trailer to carry anything but the minimum tools need for a job need a trailer and its not an SUV there built to carry 6 plus passengers and unless you have a JK with four doors not carrying more then 4 maybe 5 if small enough a jeep is a jeep or as posted further back it can be called a ORV (off road vehicle) that my opinion

Now I'm new to Jeeps, my first one. Loving it btw... I've always had trucks so I still catch myself every now and then calling it a truck, but hey, at least I'm not killing kittens.

Ironically this came up when I went for photo inspection. The lady had to check a box for car, truck, etc. She didn't know which was correct and the guy running the shop had to tell her to put SUV. She said to me, "There should just be a separate box called 'Jeep'".

My previous vehicle was a GMC Envoy. I never referred to it as anything other than "The Envoy", when the kids would ask which car we were taking. So same goes now, I say, "The Jeep". I have recently named her June though, so I'm sure once that catches on, that's what we'll say.

Talking

Well let me throw my 2 cents in here.
I may be wrong because you cannot believe everything you see on TV, but I was watching an article I think it was on either the Discovery channel or the History channel, but it was all about the Jeep and how it came to be.
Back when they came out with the Jeep they were calling it a General Purpose Vehicle, or GPV, (see where I am goin with this?) when you are saying GPV or shortened to GP it sounded like "JeePee" and in no time it evolved into Jeep, a simplified name.......and it stuck.

This brings to my conclusion that it is NOT a Car, NOT a truck, NOT an SUV, but in all actuality it is a .....GPV, a GENERAL PURPOSE VEHICLE!

Makes sense, dont it? it is the perfect acronym for just such a vehicle, to me General Purpose means it can do ANYTHING!......like I said......just my 2 cents....

I always refer to it as the Jeep. If I had to choose between car/truck I would have to go with truck. I dont remember many 4X4 cars. Ok maybe the Eagle but even that was made by Jeep.

I wouldn't even call it an suv. When we got ours last week it was because I was tired of filling up the HEMI, and I don't pull trailers like I used to. My wife and I both knew I wouldn't be happy with a car and that I always wanted a Jeep. Now we can roll with the top down, and still drive over things. It's not a truck and by no means a car. It is a Jeep. A time and trial tested name. There is no other.

After reading this whole thread I can say this. There is no other vehicle on the road that will affectionately be known by it's model name as the Jeep CJ/Wrangler. For no other vehicle will you hear it's a CJ (followed by number of series), or YJ, or TJ, or JK. For no other vehicle will you get such loyalty to and fun debates about the different series and which is better as though they were made by different companies. We fell in love with them on MASH and the Dukes of Hazard (cause we all loved Daisy and her Jeep). They are Jeeps. They were an integral part of our military, they are a lifestyle, and they are an American icon. The saying should really be, "as American as apple pie, baseball, and Jeeps".

And on Rat Patrol.

My '13 2 door has a front bumper so far. And I haven't yet gotten rid of all the Wyoming red mud.
It is the Jeep, nothing else.

Most part listings classify the Wrangler as a "Jeep Truck". I classify the Wrangler as a "Jeep".

A Jeep, is a Jeep. Pure and simple. If you look at it's history it was created to be a specialty vehicle for the military.

"Sports Utility" was a name developed WAY after Jeep was born. If anything a Jeep would be considered a "Utility Vehicle", just like the Military had them created for.

The funny part is that a Hummer should be considered the same, but not the H2 since it were built on a Truck platform, and should considered as such.

no argument there..military jeeps were simple and easy to maintain..willys,kaiser and amc civilian jeeps pretty much continued that tradition..So,at what point is a jeep not a jeep ??

Just the other day I was driving with my family to Boston - and my sister asked "So what do you call a Jeep? A truck?" and my Dad and I sitting in the front promptly turned around, looked her dead in the eyes, and synchronously said "You Call It A Jeep" - and turned back around.

New guy--first geeky post.

Ok..I'll go along with "its a jeep". After 70 years of history, it has created its own unique identity.

But--if you had to classify it as either a car or truck, (under threat of dying kittens, or some such).....its a truck.

If you look at just the pure definition of the word, or at least, its roots:
"a small heavy rectangular frame supported on four wheels for moving heavy objects"

A "truck" is simply the rolling framework upon which you can mount various other equipment.

When I was in the Army, way back in the dark ages when the Army still used what is commonly referred to as a "jeep", no one actually called them "jeeps". They were always referred to as "quarter-tons". (I always thought that was odd).
Everything the Army issues is officially referenced by its object name, then a comma, then a description. The jeeps were classified as: Truck, 1/4 ton, general purpose. (pickups were 3/4 ton, then there were the big 2.5 ton heavies, affectionately called "deuce and a half"...a nick-name for those, but 'jeeps' were called quarter-tons? {shrug}).

So. From that perspective, its a truck.

Jeeps are jeeps, that's why

Well, technically i guess you could call it a truck. It can haul, pull, push, and hit all like a truck
But recently I've been alternating my jeep and my Nissan altima going to work, and I've accidentally said "my car" a few times referring to my jeep. I get this dirty feeling deep inside my soul.
