Everyone runs into strange, wierd, or unexplainable things on the trail. Its that moment where your trying to figure out whats going on but your gut tells you to get out of there and dont turn back. So...what have you all seen. Share your stories. Does not have to be necessarily in a Jeep, just an expierence off the beaten path...

I personally was riding my 400ex along the dam behind the city reservoir near Frederick, MD. This was back when I was in high school and we were riding all the time back then. We were familiar with the area and had been all over the trails there numerous times. We would find alot of butchered deer trimmings, old cars, abandoned buildings, dumped garbage, etc. In particularly we knew of an area where there was a clearing, a campfire and pentagrams, vulgar crap, basically everything that declares yourself an outsider spray painted all over so naturally we always avoided the area cause who wants to run into the people who spray painted the stuff there in the first place. But like all things eventually thats going to happen...

On this day my buddy decides he wants to tackle climbing the hill up to where that area was on his YZ. So he throttles up the hill and I follow. I get to the top and there is a whole bunch of people in all black burning what appeared to be a sack full of something. Now take it this was early afternoon on a saturday, honestly who spends their saturday like this. Anyway, I promptly held the clutch in and kicked backwards rolling down the hill, didnt even bother trying to turn around. We got back on the path and high tailed back to his parents house.

Ive been back near that area of the woods since then but always second guess going near that place.

You had bacon on ya, didncha....

I was hiking in Custer State park in So Dak one summer and found bear tracks. Story is there are no bears out here. uh huh. Just like they kept insisting that there were no Mt lions..... Well, 2 months after one walked across the road in front of me they finally said, yeah, there are mt lions... The bear tracks still have me puzzled though. no other sign of bear since then.

I used to live in Frederick, but now I live right outside Martinsburg, WV. While I can't claim to have ever seen anything like this, I'm sure it exists. There certainly did seem to be an abundance of weirdos in Frederick...

A few strange things happened to my wife and I in the past. We were in Gettysburg one evening and somebody crossed the street ahead of us wearing all black. I told my wife to slow down as someone was in the street. As we got up to the area where this guy crossed the street, there was nobody there. :hide:

Another time we were riding the C&O Canal on our bikes and saw someone in a long coat and top hat walking along the trail. He was probably up about a 1/4 mile but I let my wife know there was someone up there and to move over. She moved over after spotting him. We kept riding and riding but never came across that guy, and we're positively sure he didn't just walk off the trail. :hide:

My ex used to live in a haunted house. TVs and stereos would just turn off and on. We'd sit down to watch TV and right after we'd turn it on, it would shut off. The moment one of us would get up, it would turn back on. Then, as soon as we'd sit down, it would turn off again. :hide:

When I first met this same girlfriend she told me she'd prove the house was haunted when I told her she was full of shit. She left a bunch of clothes thrown all over the bed and gave me the grand tour of the 2nd floor to assure me there was noone up there, and the only people home were her parents. Two hours later we returned upstairs (nobody had left the room at any time...) and the clothes were folded neatly on the bed.

I found a body out near Temple Mountain in an old lean to. He looked like he was sleeping, but I don't believe he ever woke up. He was just lying there, eyes closed, on his back, laying on top of a sleeping bag. The arid climate had given his body a mummified look and there were minor signs of animal damage to the body around the extremities. I saw his backpack and went through it and his driver's license was expire by 3 years at the time I found him. There was no sign of foul play and he looked at peace so I left him there and continued on to Moab. Never called the cops, never reported it to anyone.

Wife and I were in Utah last summer and I tried to find the place again. I had no clue where to go, how to find the place, or even if I was on the right side of the mountain. I've always thought of a death like that as being a very peaceful way to go.

back when we were kids there was an old water treatment plant, nicknamed the "Equadome", completely overgrown, the road leading to it over taken my mother nature. As teenagers we would park at a river access lot, and hike our way back to it. Usually on a weekend late at night. the building was a huge complex, all concrete, with huge pits and pipes, walkways, etc. and once inside they graffiti made each room have a theme...the "Christine" room has a mural of the Stephen King car from the movie Christine. There were stairwells that lead to upper rooms and lower basements, called the "stairway to heaven" and "stairway to hell". The alter rooms, the sacrifice rooms.

In itself it wasn't anything more than a overgrown WWII building, but take the location in the woods, the late night excursions, the weird lighting and shadows from flashlights, and the occasional run in with other teenagers exploring, thuis hearing there noises and wispers in a large open area, would completely freak you out...to the point that you would be separated from your group as some one got spooked and run off, leaving you all alone to work your way out to the car or find them. Add in the local urban legends of satanic rituals and sacrifices made for pretty hair raising outing, at least for a bunch of 15-17 year olds.

heres a good read on it

I know this is an ancient post, but I lived in St Louis all of my life, and never heard of this place. Very cool!

(ETA, this is where the shooting range is off of 94, south of 40 is now?)

Here was our creepy teen hangout in south St. Louis (by Oakville). Creepy abandoned hospital/sanitarium on the banks of the Mississippi

I would go there sometimes in the early 90s, and the area is HUGE! It even had its own power plant with smokestack and huge generators, etc. I believe the area is now owned by DNR, and is being torn down. Lots of weird graffiti there, too.

LOL ...
40 years ago riding a dirt bike when I was 18 I had a similar thing happen but they kept banging away without missing a beat !

That being said ... when cars would envade our riding area instead of staying in their section of Loves Lane at our local sandpit. We use to buzz the cars and race by throwing sand/dirt up from our race/dirt bikes towards the cars ....

One Halloween night a buddy and myself decided to go catfishing. We pulled off under a bridge down by the river and set up our rods and chairs and lantern. We just got settled good and waiting on the first bite when we heard a weird noise followed second later by what sounded like a body being thrown into the river just yards around the bend. We both looked at one another and in one movement had everything packed and ourselves in the car and were gone almost before the splash had ended.

I live in NJ and used to go to the pine barrens to find haunted stuff I have all kinds of weird stories. Many from actual paved roads so I'll skip those.

Strangest stuff I came across was

1) KKK meeting with a burning cross
2) an "occult" meeting (hoods chanting the whole nine)
3) I was hiking with my sister in Tenn. We came across a number of bodies in various states of decomposition. She was at the Univ of Tenn. and they have the body farm down there to study decomp. After I knew the story it wasnt that freaky but not know that made it weird at first.

We have a place like that here, it's not so much a trail as it is an old old country road where you can go wheel because it goes through a creek, but I've seen multiple KKK cross burnings and meetings at an old farm down here. It's also rumored to be haunted but I've yet to see/hear any evidence of it and I've been going down there for about 10 years now

In the late 80's I was out riding motorcycles in Jackson state forest, must have been 20 miles in and come to a landing with a new Suburban and new boat just sitting there. Finished the ride and called the sheriffs department later that day. The next day sheriffs dept calls back and ask if we would take them to it, sure no problem. Well they send a crown vic and now it's raining and red clay everywhere to get to the spot so could make it that day, sheriffs department returns in a couple of day and I take them to the spot, well they were both still there, just no engines, no tires and a bunch of other things missing. Turns out they were stolen a few days earlier from San Fransico.

See those all the time on post, there's one graveyard where this guy is buried with his two kids, one was only like 6 months old. I think the newest tombstone there was from like 1864 or something.
We have several of those aswell in oklahoma

A lot around lake texoma to be exact, we were on quads and came across them, kinda neat, but its one of those deals you don't really tell a lot of people about due to vandalism and people hualing things off

Back home near Coulter Pa, there used to be an old orphanage (as the story states) that was supposedly burned down by the pastor running the place. The kids were supposedly left in it because he could no longer care for them. I was never able to validate the story. The road that it used to be on is called "Thirteen Bends" because the highschoolers used to race their cars through there and there were more than a few fatal accidents.
Sometime in January or February, I was driving through there and decided to stop at the spot where it was supposed to be. It was cold outside, but when you passed the threshold of where the building stood, it got fairly hot and you could smell burnt wood and I swear you could hear kids laughing like they were playing. This was back in the early 1990s and the orphange was supposedly burned down in the 1960s. I never went back there again, and this type of stuff normally doesn't bother me.

Thats just creepy and reminds me of a story from here in Ohio where a guy did something similar and they say you can still hear the kids laughing and playing and some claim they have seen kids playing on the foundation that is left. Sorry didn't mean to hijack. lol.

Just about 3 years ago now I took my daughter out to Charlies Place for a day ride and while unloading I see a motorhome along side the trail we will take so I tell her lets keep it quiet when we ride past and she says OK.

But as we ride past I got a wiff of the most foul smell and my daughter tells me over our helmet radios "what the hell is that smell?" I say lets go back to the truck and I will check it out. I went to the motorhome and the entire interior is swarming with flys and all you can smell is death.

We rode to the top of one of the hills to get cell coverage and I call 911. After they get there it turns out the guy had commited suiside. We stayed there until the cops finally let us go and we just loaded up and went home.

That by far is the weirest thing I have ever found. I mean naked people, clothes, shoes, old cars are nothing compared to this.

I was in the boundary waters area between MN and Canada in a vast sequence of lakes. My dad and I were in a canoe on our first day out looking for a campsite. We are paddling between two islands and we spot two moose enter the water up ahead of us. It was a momma and her baby. We get close enough that we start to slow down. It was shallow enough that the mom could walk, but the baby was swimming. I wanted to go pet them, but my dad wisely wouldn't let me. Another canoe we were traveling with didn't listen to his warnings. When they got close that momma moose charged (still under water). She was still faster than anyone was expecting with only her head out of water and she darn near flipped their loaded down canoe. I was about fifteen feet from this going down and I was shocked and impressed by the power of this animal. It was a special treat for me because a moose is my favorite animal. In fact my Jeep is named Moose.

Great thread. I'll contribute.

After my ex left, I wanted some time alone. Went to a local lake to go fishing. Was around the back of the lake (horse-shoe shaped oxbow) when my spinnerbait snagged on something. It was a $12 spinnerbait so I was determined to get it back. I was using 12lb test, so I knew I wouldn't be able to just pull it loose. Kept working at it and eventually just let my rod tip work down to my bait. Spinnerbait came free and about 3 seconds later a hand floated to the top. I called the SO and they sent out a dive team. Recovered a guy's body. He'd been missing for eight weeks. About twenty feet away, they found his boat. He'd hit something, took on water quick, and couldn't swim. Apparantly didn't have on a PFD either.

I actually got cited for not having a PFD in the boat. Went and bought one of those emergency vests that afternoon.

My ex told me this story. She was working in Idaho on some training videos for the military. She was a driver. One morning, about 5am, she picked up her "crew" and was headed to where they were supposed to be on the base that day. On her way out there, she kept seeing headlights in her rearview mirror. She even took a picture of the reflection because there wasn't supposed to be anybody else headed out to this part of the base that early in the morning. I saw the picture. Anyway, she got to where she was dropping the guys off and headed back up the road towards her next stop. She never saw another vehicle, didn't pass anything, and should have been the only vehicle out there that time of day. Almost all the way back, she kept seeing the headlights. They disappeared as she got back to the main road. Scared the hell out of her.

Didn't happen on a trail but..... Driving past a supposedly haunted cemetery at night I seen a pair of red eyes in front of me, my first reaction was a deer so I slammed on the brakes and drove right threw them. I sat there for a sec thinking I imagined it and looked in my rear view mirror and saw the things staring at me from the back seat, I spin around in my seat, and nothing...... Creepy. Got my ass right the heck outta there lol. Drive that road all the time at all hours, never had that happen before or since.

I was driving on the beach one evening about 2 hours till dark. I saw sole lights in the distance and didnt think anything about it until I got closer and saw that the lights belonged to an airplane and a truck. They were moving stuff from one to the other, but I didnt even slow down. Just kept looking straight ahead as I passed. I was scared sh@tless
