Kinda sounds like my fiance. I have several more I want to do with my Jeep but like your wife, he says I don't go offroading that much (mainly a weekend climber and all DD)… I do it anyways and surprise him when the UPS guy shows up. But sorry, no advice. Just my story.

Just point out some jeeps that have been worked over that you see out and about and get some feed back. My wife is really only afraid that it will change the way it drives or make it difficult to get in and out of. I think she also doesn't understand the money that would go into it. So I am keeping stock bumpers but moding them going stubby with light bar and building my own winch mount and tire carrier down the road. Lift and tires staying under 2.5 with 33" and not until it needs tires. That gives me plenty of time to work on her. Start of with small stuff and work your way up the bug will catch if you take her out enough.

There is a lot of total BS in this thread. Even the OP knew he was BSing when he asked his question. Now if you want to talk TRUTH, here it is:

1) Modifying a Jeep makes it worth LESS money, not more. That means you will lose the total amount spent on the mod plus the reduction in the fair market value of the Jeep. Dealers don't want modded Jeeps on their lots because selling such to an unwary buyer leads to lawsuits. Just because the guy that installed the lift and tires knows he has to drive slower and manuever more carefully, does not mean that the teenager who is powerfully attracted to and buys the Jeep knows that. Once he's killed himself, the parents and the lawyers come after the dealer.

2) At least 90% of the mods made to Jeeps don't make them safer or more reliable. Bigger tires for example add stress to drivetrain, brakes, steering, and suspension - meaning that all must be properly addressed to get back to stock reliability levels. That actually is almost impossible to do, because Jeep tests every part they design extensively, and most aftermarket parts are minimally tested, they just get "beefed", just have steel added, which stresses anything the part is bolted to.

3) Most females don't want to ride in modified Jeeps. They are too hard to get into, their clothes get dirty, Jeeps are noisy, and their hair gets messy with the top down. Not only that, but they are going to want you to put the top up RIGHT NOW when rain starts hitting them in the face, and 10 seconds is too long to wait, much less 10 minutes, and WHAT THE H*!! DO YOU MEAN YOU LEFT THE WINDOWS AT HOME? None for you for the forseeable future, meanwhile she's shopping for somebody not obsessed with Jeeps.

4) Modified Jeeps tend to get used up a heck of a lot faster than stock Jeeps. My wife's WJ has 150,000 miles on it and it's bone stock. I built a CJ-7 once that took longer to build than it lasted in service. I know lots of people who modded Jeeps before the payments were over, then used them up so fast they were left only with memories and Jeep payments, while driving their little sister's castoff Civic that's been stuck in 2nd gear for two years.

5) Even if you want to deny any of this, your insurance guy knows the score, and the combination of a Wrangler and a younger driver costs about the same to insure as a Corvette with a younger driver.

If you can't handle the truth, you shouldn't be a Jeep driver. If you think everything above is not true, you're a noob.

I tried being a trail leader, so I could bounce anybody in the group with stuff on their Jeeps already broken, bald tires with protruding steel belts, and other stupid stuff. I stopped when a guy I actually had passed could not start his Jeep after a break on the trail. Then he reckoned he had to put on his new carburetor, from a box with a two year old postmark. Then he asked to borrow tools.

Modifying a vehicle is serious business that needs to be done right and the vehicle has to be looked after more carefully afterwards. Nor should you be in any state of delusion about this hobby - like a boat, a Jeep is a hole in which you pour money. But so is any hobby.

I got the same crap from my wife until I bought her a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes... Never heard another word from her about spending money on things that were not really necessary... And I sure as hell like the way she wears those shoes (win/win).

I let my wife know that I "need" to buy something new for my jeep. Then I promise her that it's not going to break the bank, and I tell her not to look at the bank account for a couple of weeks. That way when she does look at it, the transaction is a page or two back (out of sight, out of mind) so she doesn't notice the big chunk of change missing. Works every time and with more things than the jeep, such as electronics for the house. Of course she has every purse/pair of shoes she's ever asked for.

I am still in college, I have a worse GPA than my brother, have been involved in an accident while my brother has not, and my insurance is almost half of what his is. He drives a mustang, I drive a jeep. My jeep has big tires, a lift, and no fancy safety features. I looked at getting a vette instead. I couldn't afford the insurance.

First, that is a horrible story about your daughters friend... But its a perfect example of natural selection. Someone stupid enough to do that, probably in his driveway (because no legitimate shop would do that because of the liability) is bound to be the subject of a horrible story. I applaud you for having the foresight to keep your daughter out of his Jeep.
I disagree about your generalization that Jeep Mods (or any vehicle mods) reduce the value of the vehicle. If the mods are done correctly, and not of a personalization (such as embroidered seat skins, or hot pink paint) they can add value. I took in to consideration the mods that were done to my YJ when buying it, and have in the past also.
I also disagree about the insurance aspect. In the last 5 years I have had a 2006 Nissan Xterra, 2007 Nissan Frontier, 2008 Nissan Armada and the 1995 Jeep YJ. I pay $35 a month for full coverage insurance on the Jeep, where as the cheapest insurance on any of the other vehicles was over $100 per month. Now of course, you might argue that the other vehicles were more valuable, therefore the insurance should be more... But each and every one of them was highly modified, lifted, etc. and the same percentage of discount would apply to just the liability portion of the insurance.
I applaud your many years of dedicated ownership to the Jeep brand, and hope that you continue to offer such insight!

I would say you pay less to insure a US vehicle than an import. Nor should you be comparing insurance pricing without also comparing the coverage.

As for a 1995 YJ, that Jeep has a KBB value of less than $3000 to a little more than $5000 depending upon options, mileage, and condition. $35/mo ($420/year) sounds pretty high to me, considering they are only gonna pay you KBB value on a collision claim. You can always do a declared value policy but it's a lot more.

Give her the jeep, trade/sell the Honda and get a older jeep to do your mods on. Or try saying please a thousand time, it doesn't work for my kids but you might have a better chance. LOL

Let her drive! Then explain how much better the mods will make the experience not to mention safer and more reliable. Mine is not in love with looking down over the edge of the trail 300 feet into a canyon. Her biggest thrill was when we had 3 ladies show up with their own Jeeps. He latest comment Sunday after a great trip was as soon as the new job goes through you need to regear your Yj is too slwo on the highway.

The value mods, personal or performance, will always depend on the taste and desires of the buyer. So, if you are thinking in terms of value, you kind of have to think in terms of how long you can wait to find the perfect buyer that will give you the perfect price.

Chances are higher that you will lose money on the mods.

Now, to the topic on hand, I 100% agree with Whetstone. You need to talk to her and figure out the why of the situation. Talk to her about what she is hesitant about, but make sure to do so with an open mind. Try and find a middle ground or ease her worry... but remember there is a fine line between dismissing what she's saying and defending your stance.

You and me both. My wife is the best...along with your's lol.

I have a lot of "hobbies" and most of them can get quite expensive whether its Jeeps, guns, guitars, hiking equipment. I don't hide anything from her. I tell her this is what I'm doing and this is why I'm doing it, OK?..good.
If I can't enjoy life...whats the point of living?

kidding! i think the safety upgrades are the way to go. depending where you live, installing lockers would make driving in snow easier for the mrs.

I'm with you man. Some of us were stricter in vetting our future wife. I bought a 69 chevelle last month without mentioning it to my wife. She came home from work and it was parked in the garage. Wife doesn't care what I do and I am totally supportive of her hobbies.
