Wife is againt mods on family Jeep!

I recently bought a 2012 two door JK Sport. My wife traded in her 2010 VW Jetta and took the 2009 Honda Pilot I was driving, this was all her idea. This is my third jeep I have owned since we have been together, 22 years total, and the other two had a few mods, nothing crazy, just a mild lift and slightly bigger tires, a little body armor. I wanted to do this with the new JK and my wife is totally against it. She doesn't want me to touch it, she says this is both of ours and she just wants me to leave it as it is. Her other thought is that I don't go off road that much in Central Indiana and why do I need to change the truck? I tried to tell her I wanted to make it a little more off road worthy, leaning toward a 285x70 Duratracs and a two inch spacer lift, want to keep a good stock ride so she can drive it comfortably. I live 90 minutes from Badlands ORV Park and I am dying to go but don't want to take a totally stock truck. I want to give it a little personality and would love some ideas on convincing my wife. Also, this is not a money issue, not dipping into the kids college fund. Please help!

i had 5k cash saved up for my mods. once i told my wife about it, she disagreed until i agreed to give her some spending money. So after her hunger was fully satisfied (no pun intended) she allowed me to spend whats rest of it...like 2500.

At the end, i learned a lesson but i'll play much smarter next time.

she has the honda pilot now. do you have a vehicle that is just yours? if not, i would claim the jeep as yours. tell her she is free to do whatever she wants to her honda pilot.

She is not a car person. She does have her vices (furniture, clothing, shoes, etc.) which i don't question. She says she doesn't like the look or understand why I would want to change the JK.

Take her out on a trail ride, get stuck, spin the wheels, let her see the other Wranglers just going by and..What am I saying.. Just do the mods without her knowing..I told my wife I needed new tires..Ordered two inch coils, shocks, stabilizer and even new wheels. She did not even blink, only because she doesn't know what I do to my Jeep...... good luck to you my friend. You only mod once, I mean live once....

They are NOT mods...they are SAFETY UPGRADES!

22 years and you haven't learned not to question the wife?

Sounds like you have 2 options. Go ahead and do some mods on the new jeep. If she doesn't like that idea, buy a second jeep. Lots of good deals out there if you do some looking, although with spring coming soon, the prices will probably be up.

I say pick up a old CJ or YJ and lift it and our your big tires on it. That will be "your" jeep. Most
Women just don't understand. The ones that do... Your amazing.

Thankfully my wife doesn't care one way or the other as long as I am not dipping into the savings she is ok with it.

She didn't notice I took off the front plastic shield, I wonder if she would even notice the two inch spacers? I would be in the dog house a long time if she did notice the lift! Still working on her, won't give up, she usually gets tired of me and gives in. Wish me luck.

Like DawhitesJKU said, you gotta figure on spending twice as much-- my new riding mower cost me a new dining room floor as well. Whenever you do a mod, get her a pair of shoes and a nice dinner. The other thing to keep in mind: It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission when doing mods!

Take her out for a weekend ride in the Jeep, go straight to the ORV park and let her see how much fun it is and all the other Jeeps with the mods. That may win her over on modding yours.

I resemble that statement !! Divorced for 12 years and loving life. Got a girlfriend that lives two hours away and loves to come spend her weekends with me here on the lake. She loves riding the Harley and taking the Jeep out 4 wheelin'. She even buys me stuff for the Jeep from time to time. Life is Good !!

But there is Haspen Acres off road park in Indiana and the Sand Dunes in Michigan, used to go there often when I lived in Dayton Ohio. She needs to be taken out 4 wheeling, meet some other women that are into it. That may help you more than you know. Jeepers for the most part are some very friendly people in most cases. And, maybe if she drove it herself off road some, she might actually enjoy it.

Like Dabolt said, go wheeling, get stuck and make her walk out to call for help. Walk out with her, the whole time explaining how a few simple mods would have prevented the mess you are in! Good luck.

I will play the other side of the fence. Sounds like you have a sensible wife and unless you are rolling in money and have more money then you know what to do. Our economy is not getting any better and judging by your statement that you have been together 22 years and have kids approaching college age might want to step back and enjoy what you have. Your new jeep is more capable then you think and unless you are having other marital problems don't let something as stupid as spending money on a jeep become one. I find sleeping with my wife much more enjoyable then sleeping with a jeep lol. Besides what is the hurry leave it stock a while and in year try again. Trust me my wife noticed when I lifted mine 3/4" i doubt your wife is that stupid or why would you want to be married to her for 22 years lol.

I have been married 14 years- I understand. Whenever I mention a new toy- boat, Jeep, truck, girlfriend- out comes the rubber stamp- NO! Now I just buy it, take the abuse for a while, buy her a nice piece of jewelry and move on. Better to ask forgiveness than permission.

The biggest problem is asking for permission, it is much easier to ask for forgiveness. I learned that a long time ago and just do what I need to do. If the wife does not like it so be it, I do not understand why women need to have $500 plus purses to carry junk around in..... Once you ask then they have a say in the decision and get all upset when you do it anyways...... a 50-50 relationship means that 50% of the time they will agree with you............ the other 50%... oh well.............

I am cracking up and getting a lot of good advice. I am a disabled vet, wounded in Iraq in 2004, so my kids college is taken care of by the state (Thanks Indiana). Plus I have other money set aside for them, they are 9 & 13, that will help with other school expenses. I don't think I will risk trying to get anything over on her, I always get busted! Gonna slow down and enjoy what I have.

Those guys who are telling you to do things behind your wife's back can fully expect their wives to be doing stuff behind their backs. Enjoy, fellas. Find out WHY she doesn't want you to mod the jeep and work from there. You said money isn't the issue, maybe she just likes it the way it is. Maybe she's heard how dangerous lifted vehicles are, maybe she's afraid young ladies will start chasing you. There could be a million different things she's thinking. It does sound like the most sensible thing to do, provided you have the time/space/funds is to buy a project jeep and make it your baby. Either way, good luck, and props for respecting your partner!
