Wife MADE me buy a winch!

I've been kicking around buying a winch since the end of last year. The issue has really come up now that it's warming up outside. Problem is, I tend to be a saver instead of a spender, so I was doing my typical thing of backing off on buying one. Yesterday, my wife flat out told me that we WOULD be out on the trails again this year and she was tired of backing off from all the fun looking mudholes because we were worried about getting stuck. I got the BUY THE DANG WINCH! speech from her. So anyway, one Warn M8000 is now on it's way to my Jeep front bumper. Oh yeah!

I love my M8000, it paid for itself the 1st time I got stuck. Did you order a mounting plate for it?

No, haven't ordered the plate yet. I need to talk to somebody about the plate before I order it. I've got a brush guard on the front of my YJ and I think it's going to require a raised plate. I may have to have something made, I don't know.

I gotcha, one place you might want to talk to is Rough Country. I bought my plate from them for $70. I'm real impressed with the quality, it's 1/4" thick, it fit perfectly and it has a nice finish. Theres no need to pay hundreds of dollars for a plate with a name. I hope you find one that works, afterall, it sounds like you found the perfect wife!

*LOL*. You know, there are advantages to not having a winch if you happen to get stuck in the middle of nowhere. Gotta kill time somehow, right? Hehehehe!

We bought a jeep last year. My wife said "I want a winch." This was prompted by an episode 3 years ago when we got into a difficult situation on a jeep trip with her sister and brother-in-law. We got STUCK in a creek. We got out but I wound up having to have an MRI and a procedure done on my lower back from all the lifting and straining. It was just the final straw in an already existing condition but wasn't fun at all.

I didn't argue and a Warn m8000 resides on a Rough Country mount on the front of our JK. It hasn't had to be used and may never need to be but it's there just in case and the wife is happy. Winches increase the cool factor of jeeps too.

Well, she does have a younger sister who has recently gone back into the dating pool....but trust me, you're better off with just the winch and not the wench.

Been busy, but finally got out there today and mounted that shiny new M8000 on my front bumper. Sure will feel more comfortable out in the woods now. Maybe next weekend!

Nice! Be sure to spool it out with 5 wraps left on the spool and put a 1000lbs load on it to set the cable before winding it back on. It's also a good idea to paint a section of the cable red or orange a ways out so that you'll know when your close to the end of the cable. Then take a rag and wipe the cable, while its spooled out, with motor oil to protect it from rusting, Warn recommends that. I hope you don't have to use it next weekend but if you do, you'll have more fun talking about getting unstuck than anything else!

My wife bought me a Smitty Built SRC front bumper and XRC 10k winch and IPF fogs lights for my Birth Day here in the pic. And also she got me 5:38 Yukon gears and TeraFlex 4" lift with a High Jack and rear mount. And she surprised me today with a Jeep T-Shirt and a Red and Black Jeep beach towel with seat clamps for attaching it to ur seat to keep it dry and Kill Zone 3 with Game guide! I'm a luck man also lol!

Thanks for the tips. Before I get out and possibly need it, I'll need to do some reviewing on proper techniques. I know a person can get seriously hurt if winching incorrectly. I imagine there's several threads here. I'll search around.

Oh, and also.......I sure hope Warn's winches are better than their installation instructions, because their installation instructions SUCK!

warn winches are great! also a winch line dampener would be a good idea. it drops the line to the ground if the cable snaps, vs. it whipping around into you or into your rig.
