Will a CJ engine fit in a TJ?

Hey guys,
My engine died in my 98 TJ and I'm getting pretty desperate for a new engine and one that's not too expensive. So my question is in the title, can I take a 4cyl CJ engine like say an 89 and put it in my TJ? I won't be doing any of the work, my local mechanic will. Is this too much extra work?
Thanks!

Was it the 4 or 6? How many miles?

How expensive are you willing to pay for a new engine?
Is the engine fuel injected or carb?

Lots of states require the engine to be of the same year or newer to the vehlicle getting said engine.. Be sure to look into that..

First of, 1989 would be a 2.5L YJ.

Also, like XJ Knight said, it's probably illegal for you to do that.

I would either part the jeep out and buy another, or find a junk yard 2.5L.

I want to be shocked but for some reason I'm not. The green commies running our country under the command of Barackmadinejad would ban gasoline engines altogether if they had everything their way.

It was a 4cyl engine in my Jeep.
And I'm a student working part time so it's not about what I'm willing to pay, but more like what I can pay.
I'm just trying to figure out if the mounts are the same and if I'll have to use any other parts from the CJ.
I'll check into the legality of the situation, but I sorta have my doubts that little old South Carolina would care that much.

Just take the long block from the YJ and use it in your TJ...the casting numbers should be the same and it will work
