winch cable

I pulled my winch cable out too far and the cable disconnected. I'm being told ill need a new cable in order to have it re attach because the end of the cable unraveled a little.

My question is... Can you just cut the unraveled part (half inch at most) and re attach it or is a new cable really necessary?

Thanks for responding

This has happened many times.... Sometimes the cable close to the spool with be flattened from being under the wrap and under pressure of the pull.
If your Cable is just frayed a little on the end and otherwise still in good shape, just reuse it.
I take the frayed end and twist it as tight as I can get it and wrap a couple wraps of electrical tape around it and re thread it.....
But thats just me, others would have you buy all new... "BH"

Edit: Now would be a good time to Lube your cable while you re-spool... I use old motor oil , just use a wet rag to coat the cable while it spools on....Keeps the cable from corroding ....

Thank you. I told the dealership a new cable wasn't necessary but they said it was. The dealership wanted to charge me 200 for the cable and 300 for labor. This is the same jeep dealership that said they never heard of jeep covers when I asked what types they sold.

I just don't understand WHY you would need a NEW cable...As long as you spool it back on the same direction it came off. It should lay good on the spool and shouldn't give you any trouble.
Cable is available at any Logging Supply, they can also swage on any type of ends that you might want. ( Loops, hooks, what ever).
As far as Lubing the cable... A little Diesel works good too, penetrates the strands a little better and doesn't pick up as much dust... Good Luck ! "BH"

Reuse the cable. I used to own some garbage trucks and we used our cables daily for loads much heavier than a Jeep ever could. If the cable came out and frayed, we'd just wrap the cable at a point above the fraying and cut the cable thru the wrapped area. Thread it back in and reuse it. We'd get 2, maybe 3 years out of the cable before we'd need to replace it. Of course we were using heavier cable, but I feel the practices are the same.

If you DO decide to replace it, spend that 500 dollars that the dealer wants somewhere else and get yourself synthetic
