Winch plate question.

I got the Smittybuilt winch plate at the same time I got my Engo 10k winch from Chris at JeepAddOns. I actually got to try out the winch last night after my initial setup pull, and it worked great. Question is it seems that the cable is not riding on the fairlead but actually riding on the mounting plate.

Has anyone had to modify their mounting plate either by grinding down the opening more to allow the cable to rest on the fairlead or open up the bolt holes to allow for more up down adjustment of the fairlead height?

I know the cable riding on the mount is not good for either but with it not riding on the fairlead it actually is not allowing it to feed back in correctly and I ended up having it kind of bunch up on one side and almost get bound under the control box.

I am sure I can fab a bracket for the control box to sit a bit higher but that is still not going to fix the problem. I had to actually manually moved the cable back and forth while pulling it in, thankfully I was not under a vehicle load but had pulled out a nice size bush from my brothers front yard so I was in little danger.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take some shots of it, so we can see what's happening.
Almost sounds like something, winch/fairlead is not installed correctly.
Or by chance do you have the cable wound the wrong way? It should spool off the bottom, not the top.

I will post some this evening.

But the cable is feeding from the bottom of the winch. It looks like the plate opening is about 1/4" higher than the fairlead roller. I am thinking this is one of the reasons why it does not respool correctly.

Yep have to agree. Making two different companies products work together sometimes takes some modding.

Let's see, you could trim the mount down, drill new mount holes so you can raise the rollers, or raise the winch up on the plate so you have clearance.

Hmm, went and looked at SB's site and right there is a photo of the plate/roller/winch installed on a Jeep. And yep the plate sits higher then the lower roller.

But the way the winch is installed the line is rising up, from the roller to the winch drum, clearing the plate.

Looks like the winch you have is sitting too low. And causing the problem.

One other question. when you spooled it in did you have any weight on the line or was it just free spooling back in on its own?

2 things you could do,, first is go to fastenall get some 1\4 thick washers and some 1\2 thick washers,,, put them between the winch and plate see what ones work best,,, or remove winch ,, go to a welding shop and have them cut the lip off with a plasma cutter. jmo
